That's a bit of an eye opener, but then anything that's in any way ecological by way of transport in the US is usually killed off rather quickly by the oil and automobile industries. So, battery technology is there, still rather expensive (as the Renault's 22k of leased batteries) but not necessarily just a couple of trips to the shops and you're screwed. I also didn't realise how far hydrogen fuel cells are from affordability. It's all to do with zero emissions, perhaps they could, you know, burn the stuff in an internal combustion engineOn the subject of the electric car here is a good documentary about them:
