Whats the comms unit like? Hope it's o.k. as there a bugger to try and get hold of second hand as the very late 406's have the ESP,206 gti 180's are the same though.

Imagine how many got squished under the sCRAPage scheme :( where the owners bought a really nice* Kia instead.

Autotrader just said there's no 2.2's at the moment.

There was one around her when I was looking it was a 51 plate saloon on about 76.000 miles.... I'd have got it if she had let me shoot the dog.

Yep, chrome handles to match the gear knob....
I'm a teeny tiny bit jealous... :(
Me too. Wish I'd found this one 2 years ago.

It's fine. Between that and the lack of A/P faults, I'm still anticipating the snag(s).

Oh! one more snag - the aircon doesn't work. Compressor operates, so it must have some gas, maybe just not enough......

Can take a bit of finding - the ad for this one didn't include 2.2, 136, diesel or executive in the title. I kinda tripped over it.

THAT is why it's well worth keeping an eye out, I guess sometimes they pass around between numpty owners at under a grand and no-one knows what model it is anymore.

Have you thought about stashing a spare 2.2 for in the future?

Yes, but I've nowhere to stash it and think it would deteriorate over time anyway.

My bro & I have both now swapped to late model 6's to forestall the day when we have to resort to finding the least worst alternative from the hideously ugly creations all manufacturers seem to have assumed we will want next.

He didn't really want a 2.2, preferring a 110 for the economy and £145 road tax, but I eventually convinced him this one was too good to miss. Funny how things turn out.

Curiouser and curioser. :?

Did a bit of investigation today, initially no response from PP2k or Galletto, found diag. port fuse gone - F5 this time - is nothing standard?

Fixed the airbag fault, at least for now, the usual pretensioner suspect, driver's side this time. :D

Checked the aircon - no high or low pressure indications, compressor clutch works, evaportor temp dropped slowly from 18 to 13 degrees with 19 degree ambient so some refrigeration must be taking place, but when the fan speed was increased the evaporator temp climbed pretty quickly. Worth a re-gas attempt, methinks.

Then checked the additive ecu faults - showing permanent faults for additive pump and filler cap, but no EML or A/P fault showing. :?
Checked engine ecu - only the common pre-post heating fault showing....
Upstream and downstrem DPF temps both 752 degrees wih a cold engine, zero differential pressure, can only mean one thing - it's already defapped! :supafrisk:
(I was wondering why there was no mention of 'Antipollution' servicing, additive top-ups and the like in it's recent history, nor any current problems).

Ecu file HW & SW codes are both later than the original from my car, (DAM 9614, March 2003), so I surmise it's running a standard power, defap version of its original software - this one's DAM 9825 Dec. 2003.

Now I'm trying to think of a way of determining if the FAP is truly empty without removing it. Ideas, anyone?

Interesting..

Doggy' how have you tested the aircon
Mine isn't working..

So can you actually fire these up with no gas in them..

Can you give it a tap to see how it sounds, or maybe check the bolts for 'shiny-ness' if that is a proper word..?

On later full-mux 406's you can monitor evaporator temperture, condenser pressure and cabin temperature via PP2k
So can you actually fire these up with no gas in them..
No, it won't engage the compressor clutch if there's no residual gas pressure - this one either has a bit left, or the low pressure detection isn't working properly. I think it has some gas since it is doing a tiny bit of refrigerating.
GingerMagic wrote:Can you give it a tap to see how it sounds, or maybe check the bolts for 'shiny-ness' if that is a proper word..?
I was thinking that, but other than trying to see if it 'sounds' the same as mine I can't see how you can be sure. If it's not a recent mod the bolts may not give much away. Suppose what I really need is an intact FAP to tell if it makes a different noise when tapped. Never thought I'd be wishing for one of those.

Fitting a 6-speed more or less forces a clutch/dmf/driveshaft oil seals change and would at least double the cost of this car, so I think it'll stay as it as, my bro having an exceptional disparity between length of arm and depth of pocket.

Had a quick look underneath today, just to confirm it doesn't have a 110 exhaust or anything more exotic, but it looks standard. Also discovered that the 'frayed bit of rope', my bro spotted underneath was actually the remains of the additive tank wiring and pipework, which appear to have lost an argument with something a some point.

 I think I figured a way of determining the state of the DPF without stripping it down.

If I re-enable the dpf code, I can measure the differential pressure across the cat/fap assembly.
Note the pressure measurement lines in the pic below.....

Image

One is on the inlet end of the cat, the other, (16 in the diagram), on the outlet end of the FAP.
These go to the differential pressure sensor which allows the ecu to monitor the pressure across BOTH cat and FAP.

Downloaded the original ecu file to my car this evening and established I have 5.9 mbar pressure drop at 3000 RPM. :supafrisk:

Now, assuming the new one has an intact cat, which my mk1 gas exhaust gas analyser, (nose), reckons it does, I should get a similar reading.
Ran out of time for part 2 of the test tonight, but I think it should confirm there is no obstruction.

Stay tuned for the next thrilling episode, entitled "Who butchered the power steering pipework?"

Mmm, curious, sounds like it's been de-fappered so its either been done under the instruction of an owner-in-the-know or fixed* on the cheap? the box of tricks underneath might have been struck by something like you say although you'd think that'd short something out an cause mayhem.

Your Bro is lucky to have you to help, although it doesn't really need fixing as such....but tinkering is more fun.

and now, the power steering pipework massacre.

Noticed oily stains on the front of the engine and around the power steering reservoir when we picked it up....

Image

...but didn't see this till after we got back.

Nice.
The seller described having had a leak and the garage having several goes at fixing it, eventually 'replacing everything'. Shortly afterwards the alternator failed, (mine did this after being drenched in diesel, so P/S fluid could easily do the same). Far from 'replacing everything', I think they've bypassed the cooling loop.

Looking at the pic from Service Box,

Image

I reckon we're going to have to replace 'steering low pressure pipes' (9), (11) and 'hydrualic pipe', (10).

Anybody done any of this before? Any hints or traps for the unwary?
