Check out a product called Vactan. It's a rust convertor with an acrylic blended in. It chemically converts the rust but dries like plastic (the rust goes black once converted). I've been using it for years with excellent results. It needs very little in the way of surface preparation, just a quick going over with a wire brush to get the loose rust off. I usually brush it on, although in the past I have diluted with a little water and sprayed out of a garden weed sprayer. The stuff I put under the boot floor and arches of the 406 2 years ago is still there and doing it's job. If I were fussy it could be overcoated with underseal or some such. It won't leave a pretty finish but if you want a rusty surface stabilised and protected then it's well worth a look.

Cheers I'll take a look at that too. Is that stuff ok if it got onto exposed threads/nuts etc?

I used to get a pot of grease and empty it into an old large ice cream container and mix it with old engine oil to make a thick paste and paint that on,the grease makes the mix stick and saves on all the drips on the drive.

Don't seen why not, I don't recall having a problem at least.
