I was handed the verdict today, and the 406 lives (just barely)! :cheesy:

An additional £40 of damage and it would have been scrapped, since the insurance companies use the cost of new parts to calculate the total expense. I would have been perfectly happy with used replacement parts in decent condition, but apparently that's not OK.

I am well happy that I get to keep my trusty French cruiser :-)

Phew! That's a relief!

It's funny insurers insist on new parts as I'm sure the repairers don't use them...

Parts have to be new, whether they're OEM or non-OEM.

The rear wing is only available as an OEM part, and it's astoundingly expensive. The wing mirror I'm getting is a "new third-party replacement part", which is a code name for "mirror pulled off another wrecked car". Otherwise, the repair would have been too expensive, leading to a totaled car.

It really is crazy. My car is in as perfect condition as any 15-year-old car can be. It's 100% straight, no rust, low mileage (probably the lowest-mileage 2.2 petrol in the country), high-spec trim level, really well kept and serviced, and yet a simple bent rear wing could very well have totaled it.

Next time you insure it, you want to have an agreed value & condition policy
