The VAG units pull considerably harder from lower revs due to lower gearing and 'feel' faster as a result.

The HDi although it has a short power band is a bit more progressive and long-legged.

Oh, and you will NEVER catch my post - whoreiness [spelling?]

Actually, next week I shall be driving a brand new Poxhall Ashtray 1.7 CDTi in Spain so I shall see if it's all true or not.

Tip Of The Week: Never try to oversteer a Golf on a narrow country lane without first remembering to take the traction control crap off. It gets scary when half way through a bend you end up lurching forwards when the road ain't in front of you!
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

you should try the new Volvo S60 D5, 182 bhp and 295lb/ft of torque from 1500rpm to 4800rpm, and 0-60 in 6.9 seconds, plus theres the noise the engine makes 8) you would never know its a diesel

Depending on cash next year and if I'm staying diesel I'm quite tempted by a BMW 530D.
They seem to go alright and not too heavy on the juice either.
Bound to be comfy with lots of toys too.

I'll just lube up come service time
