9.4 is the lowest the fuel computer dare go, if it really told you what it cost to leave the chavs behind you may think better of it :)

[science bit]

The V6 will do around 35 in 1st and 65 in second before it hits the rev limiter.

Given a rev limit of 6.5 we could say that we get 5 MPH/1,000 RPM in 1st and 10MPH/1,000 RPM in 2nd. The V6 is just shy of 3l displacement and it is 4 stroke. This means that each revolution will draw 1.5l of air through the engine.

Three links for the basic facts:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air-fuel_ratio
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Density_of_air
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline

Assume a Lamda of 1 and get your slide rules out and it turns out that hitting the rev limiter in 1st gives 2.2MPG and 4.5MPG in second

Assuming the same gear ratios the 2.0l will be doing 3.4 & 6.8 MPG, boost on a tubby will increase the air density.

Boosted by 1barg the density of the air would double and the MPG would halve.

Perhaps we should have a "how fast can you go in each gear" compo :cheesy:

Mine are:

1st - 30 something (around 35 I think)
2nd - 65ish
3rd - better not say :)

How long does it take your engine to go bang...

Post by steve_earwig »

Look, it just seems to me you lot are encouraging each other to thrash your motors until they go bang. My crime was chasing bimmers, admittedly not too sensible either but not quite so, erm, daft.

Blimey, someone reads my posts!

What's the point, all I could chase with the D9 is cyclists and tractors...

I have two excuses for hitting the limiter on mine and it is not often that I do it.

Excuse (1) Playing with chavs et al. The look on their faces can be priceless.

There was a rather nice 528 convertible enjoying the last of the sun the other week. The driver was not best pleased that the average looking estate car could keep up with him with ease. There are also the hot hatchers and scoobys around that are begging to be put in their place.

Excuse (2) Outruning a 4x4 that got rather close to my rear end.

Doing 40mph round a roundabout with my rear view mirror filled with the radiator grille of a 4x4 was rather disconcerting. The vehicle was close enough (less than 600mm/2 foot)that a missed gear change would have resulted in a rear end shunt. On the run out from the roundabout I went to the limit in 2nd to give me distance before I changed gears.

I agree about not thrashing cars for the hell of it. But on a properly warmed up engine there should be no risk.

Personally I like to know the limits of the car so that I don't get a surprise when I least want it.

I usually found bimmer drivers don't actually know how to drive, they just rely on the loud pedal. I also burned off a Crapi with an 850 mini once... I'd stay away from the chavs though, testosterone does not a sane driver make.

Incidently, I still know the guy I sold the mk1 16 valver to, it eventually dropped its' gearbox in the road

They do it to bikers on slippery roads too, not funny. I do have a solution to bad drivers but I found 4x4 door mirrors are too high to kick off...

That is the best option. Sometimes the way to achieve that is to leave them behind. Last thing I want at times is a chav box on my tail down a wet country lane.

Ouch - that has got to hurt. I had a ZX which sheared the engine mounts, almost dropped its drivetrain on the road. One of the lads at work had an escrote van which dropped its engine on the road one day.

The roundabout thing was nothing to do with bad driving. The driver of the 4x4 was generally a good and considerate driver. It was personal, that day they decided to try and play car sumo with me. Not a game I wanted to get involved with and never on a public road.

Not long after that, they tried it again from the side. They were at the next roundabout junction as I was going round it and pulled in front of me. I took evasisve action and only just avoided a colision.

With the roundabouts, the other driver had a distinct lack of testosterone
