Depends how you drive it. The tubby's capable of around 50mpg on the motorway...

Well I called into the pug stealers on the way home and picked up a 407 brochure. The specs for the load space and stuff are pretty poor as we knew, and the insurance grouping is astronomical! I'd really want a 2.0 HDi 136 GT SW like this to get the spec I'm after (I love my leather trim, I need leather again!), and a quick internet search tells me you'd struggle to get one for less than 15.5K, which is quite badly over budget. If I'm going to get a proper replacement family car (option 4 above) I'm sticking with my 1 year old / 10K miles thing.... might stretch a bit on either criteria (1 yr & 15000 miles or 18mts and 10000 miles). I know I could get an older / higher milage one but that doesn't do it for me :| .

Dare I ask why not? Even if I had the money I'd much rather pick up something with 50k miles and perfect maintenance for a fraction of the price, than a virtually new thing that's not had a chance for anything to fail

Personally I don't see much of a point in buying a (406 class) car for more than a couple of grand. It's virtually free motoring! I mean besides the price, what's the practical difference between a £1500 '00 D9 and an '04?

Good point Matt, and I don't really have an answer, why does anyone buy a new car? I agree that there's no need to spend that kind of cash, but the wife and I work bloody hard for it and it is nice to get a new car isn't it? I think she likes having the shiny new thing on the drive, whereas I like to get the newest and nicest stuff that our budget will stretch to. Getting a brand new one and losing 10 grand in the first year is a mug's game, but getting "nearly new" is a reasonable compromise IMHO. You still get the pleasure and prestige of having a new car whilst avoiding the biggest hit to the wallet. I've always been the sort of person who'll buy understated luxury rather than flash, so I'd rather have a top spec ford or pug than a low spec merc or beemer for example. If I'm gonna spend a lot of time in it I want the best specced, most luxurious, safest, most economical, most versatile car I can afford (i.e. a large diesel estate with every toy in the book  ).

I still don't know what to do though, there really is no point in changing the car if there's nothing out there that clearly stands out as an obvious replacement. :?

I viewed a couple of V70s when I was shopping for my estate, but didn't get one partly because the load area was so small

C5 estate (wharehouse on wheels, stuffed full of toys and more gremlins than the mind can comfortably imagine).

Buy a low mileage 406 V6 coupe (from a stealer so you get to pay more for it :P ) and put the massive saving into a petrol fund ;)

Cheap, powerful, fun, comfortable, relaxing, DAMN good looking - it's got it all! Gah I wish I'd managed to get that mot failure v6 coop off ebay...
