I'd have said to Clarkson...

"...because they're stylish, cheap, drive well, handle beautifully, are comfortable, very well equipped, and don't make you look like a ponce in the way hun cars do". Model for model the 407 is cheaper, faster, more economical, much better equipped, better handling and 200kg lighter than the current mundano.

My other car is a 207 1.4 sport - it's very nice indeed, albeit a little short in the leg, but that's to be expected with such a small powerplant. It's got a wonderful chassis, a brilliant combination of nimble handling and good ride that only Peugeot seem to know how to do properly. I very nearly went for a 308 cos they have some cracking huge discounts available, and they're a very decent bit of kit indeed, but just couldn't justify the extra running costs over a 207 as a second car.

My 107s (I got though two) were a bundle of cheap, reliable, charismatic fun. They also hold their value astonishingly well - the first was traded in and i had lost only £100 in a year with 11k miles, and the second went after a year to buy the 407 and lost only £255 in a year with 7k miles, so I got 2 years of fun, utterly reliable new car motoring for £355 - you couldn't by a decent used car for that price. I mean, what other car of any price loses only 2% - 5% of it's value in a year?

So, lots of reasons to buy a peugeot if your a real human being and not a smug twot with the fashion sense of a reptile and a hairdo like a drunk brillo pad like Clarkson.

You must have got those 107's at a *cracking* new price there!

What happened to the 2.7HDi? I'd love to know what they're like

I had a large legal bill to pay in a hurry for my divorce, so i had to sell it at short notice.

In general I loved it, but felt the V6 HDi was horribly mismatched to the auto box. Turbo cars with slushmatics are bad at the best of times, but one with such a narrow and peaky powerband was truly bad. It was really starting to get to me so I would've probably traded it for a petrol 407 sooner or later anyway. As it is, the 2.2 petrol is within a gnats as quick, and gives only 2 or 3 mpg worse, but needs cheaper and less frequent servicing, so I followed What Cars? advice and went for the 2.2 sparker with the slick 6 speed box, as they rated it as the best all round unit. Having had it a few weeks now, I'd be very much inclined to agree.

As for the 107s, a mate of mine is a sales manage for a pug dealers up north so I got very keen discounts on both, which paid dividends come sale time.

I think lots of people will ditch the Diesels over the next few years (especially for private use) as they're getting very expensive to run and are way too complex.

I think we're being used as guinea pigs by the manufacturers in a kind of super long term test for the new technology - only WE pick up the tab :|

Even when I drive the Astra 1.8 petrol it's nice to have that zingy throttle response and the wide torque band.

I still hate petrols. We rented a 1.6L :!: petrol Mundane in Germany and it was just diabolical. OK, the engine size is very lacking, especially for an estate, but the 405 we had was much much quicker and more pleasant to drive. Don't know what a 2L petrol would be like, but I just don't like high revvers... seems like they have to try too hard. :|

You really need to try driving the 2.0t, which goes flatter than a diesel at pretty much bang on 4000rpm yet can still pull hard even when towing another car, or the 3.0V6 which is happy to spend it's life under 1500rpm around town since it has pretty much the same low-end torque as a HDi. The big difference is the V6 will actually try hard if you want it to, at the expense of low single digit mpg figures

In fact the 2.0t is pretty much just a fast diesel you fill up from the green pump :cheesy:
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Or the 2.2 EW12 petrol engine in the 406 - instant low and mid range torque with no poxy HDi style turbolag, yet it still give high rev power too, something a diesel, with no ignition advance, can ever do. Find the righ petrol motor and you'll never want a noisy, dirty, narrow powebanded, expensively fuelled diesel again.
