What about the ol' manual choke.

And the cars where you needed to know the way to start them. Better than any immobiliser

Back when i was 17 and on the hunt for a Fiesta Diesel 8) for my first car I went to plenty of private household to look at there Fezzers which were advertised in the local rag. After looking at around 5 i decided on a lovely 88E 'L' spec model which had all the luxuries i wanted like rear wiper and front head restraints which the 'Popular Plus' and 'Popular' didn't have :frown:

Note: the 1.6D engine was not available in 'Popular' spec :D

I had a 1.3 309GE as my first car, which came with no central locking, no electric windows, different locks/keys on all doors, boot and ignition, no pas, no ABS, no air-con (obviously), no sunroof, a funky rubberette type rear spoiler, no power at all, ever, and a clock where the rev counter should have been. At least it had a heated rear window to keep your hands warm while pushing the sodding thing off the side of the road...

I was an expert on the 309, I could rebuild the gearboxes with my eyes shut, good job too, they were rubbish :cheesy:

Oh man  I changed hundreds of handbrake cables on those :frown:

Well she's got the leccy windows but is lacking in a rev counter and wooden trim. Insane money. I might convert my 406 to LHD and sell it in france

Basically, I seem to remember. The autos also had cruise control  (They hadn't figured out how to add them to manuals then). I can still remember the sound of those rattly tappets.

Got boxed in by some yokel's minivan in a pub car park near Wellingborough years ago. He refused to move it till the skittles match was over, so my pals & I 'bounced' it out of the way. Left it in the corner, with driver's side aginst one wall and back doors against the other :D

Most of my mates are of the same age and they haven't driven a car without synchromesh! Dad's old 1979 Holden didn't have it - Was good fun doubling it back into gears when I learnt how to drive manual!

It did have an Alpine Cassette Player and AM only radio - No aircon, windy windows but it had a tacho (Which didn't work)....Did i mention that it came standard with leaks every time it rained?

The non-assisted brakes and the copious amounts of rust meant that he wanted to sell it before I could drive it...How I miss that car!

Going back to the Talbot Alpen I remember my mate's Dad had one - it was 'top of the range' with squishy velour seats and that trip computer had big snapy buttons where you kinda flicked between functions like an 8-track tape and the display was 'Gents Casio Watch' flickery green if I remember. Also wasn't the PAS stupidly light?

On a similar note another mate's Dad had a Talking Maestro but I never got to witness that - maybe it ever worked?

Anyone else remember when 15" wheels were considered "massive rimz"
