Reliant Robin....ha...I've done quite a bit of work on those, famous for setting fire from fuel leaking onto the exhaust from the fuel pump or carb inlet pipe, not forgetting the tendency to roll over fairly easily.

My wife works for one of the big banks and has been told her section may be next in line for Rrrrrrrrredundancy  Plus the fact that nobody I have spoken to in the trade about the Saab, has a good word to say about them.

We'll see how things go in the next few weeks.

Basically, it's a Vauxhall Vectra, failing EGR valves, pixel problems on the LED dash, broken springs, electrical problems, poor interior trim, heavy tyre wear and poor handling, not to mention engine management faults.

The car might have been perfect for all I know, but everyone I talked to said I must be mad, but my wife's work situation killed it.

I think she'll be ok as she has been there 25 years and does a job that requires experience.

I still want to sell my 4x4 though.

Hope it works out Ok with your good lady's work jasper.

I looked at a few 9-5 estates before I bought the pug. For me it has to be diesel as I do a lot of miles, but the 2.2 seemed noisy & gutless so for a while I considered a v6.
After some research I found a few with replacement engines, then one that had had 2 in less than 100k! Seems they burn a bit of oil so have to be topped up from time to time, but the dipstick tube takes ages to give a correct level, so they get overfilled ocasionally.....
gets rid of the excess via the breather......
which gets sucked into the engine......
then all you need is someone too dumb to stall it when it won't stop on the key, so it runs away & wrecks the engine

As you say they're basically vauxhalls - I think the 9-3's a vectra in disguise, heard the 9-5's actually a Fiat Croma

2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)

Back in the late 80's and early 90's Saabs were in a class of their own...well engineered, solid, very reliable etc etc but in recent times they've become a bit rattly and shoddy I hear. TBH I was surprised when Jasper said he wanted one and wondered whether I'd got it all wrong maybe?

Actually, speaking of Vauxhalls, her indoors 53 plate Astra has been a bit of a pain with a blowing eggsauce manifold gasket, knackered thermostat, leaking fuel filter, whizzing noise no-one seems to know what it is, weird performance, suspension knocks, and a realy *really* nasty interior AND the paintwork seems to scratch every time you go near it :frown:

Anyhoo, jobs are more important for now so hope things work out ok Jasp's.

Thanks for the kind words fellas :D

To be honest, my experience of the Saabs were as stated above, the older ones were pretty classy motors, so when she mentioned the Saab, I wasn't too concerned.

The trouble is, that I didn't do my research properly, If I'd known that Saab was owned by GM and that the engine is the one devoloped by GM, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo, I wouldn't have gone near it. Basically, it's my silly fault for assuming that Saab is still a good name, sadly, allegedly, it no longer is

When we know for sure what her job situation really is, we may still go down the road of the 407, despite the alleged clutch problem, (it only does motorway miles anyway), personally, I would rather keep the 406, it has some cosmetic car park damage, but it's only done 90,000 motorway miles to work and back, we have never used it for long trips as we have the 4x4 7 seater.

I made the mistake with our previous car of thinking 111,000 miles was a lot for a Xantia when in fact it is nothing much at all, I seriously regret selling the Xantia, despite what a couple of people on here said, Xantias are very good cars in my personal experience.

Welly...the Astra is famous for breaking rear coil springs (fronts as well).Bottom ball joints are common failures, so are the inner track rod ends (rack side). Exhaust manifold gasket is a fairly simple job, the running problems are nearly always down to the EGR valve, but a good clean inside the throttle body does a world of good on those.

My bro's got a Saab 9-5 diseasel at the moment and he's having problems with it, spends more time in limp mode than it does running properly. He really needs to get it seen to though, drove it all the way home from Disneyland Paris fully loaded at 80 with the engine management light on the other day, really can't be doing it any favours!!

He had a 9-3 diesel before that and to be fair that was a pretty good car.

I'd consider a 9-5 though, my bro isn't exactly known for his mechanical empathy, I'm sure if it was cared for properly it'd be fine....

I forgot to say her indoors Astra had a rear spring replaced about 2 months after I bought it

Bye Bye 406!! and my Nissan Terrano.

Well, after much debate and aggro, we are finally able to pick up our 56 reg 407 2.0 136 HDi SE.

We will pick it up tomorrow morning at 9am.

We had a huge delay due to the change over of our private reg from the 406 to the 407, we still haven't received the reg doc, but the dealer is charging us a refundable deposit for the reg doc for the 406 so that we can have the car.

When I get time I will post some pics and a report on it.

Saloon or (much sexier) estate?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Some pics of the 407.

This 407 has Cruise Control, Auto headlights and wipers, Auto dimming mirror, electric fold in mirrors that fold in when you lock the car, bluetooth for your phone, individual climate control for driver and passenger (you can set temp for either seperately). It has illuminated vanity mirrors both sides
ABS and all sorts of stuff that I haven't worked out yet.

It drives very smooth, corners like on rails, it's very quiet and so much more comfortable than the 406...no rattles or squeaks like the 406.

It has loads of power, but if you try to set off too fast there is a bit of turbo lag, then a big kick up the backside when the turbo comes in.
The six speed gearbox is very smooth, 6th is great on the motorway, and on a long A road stretch the engine is revving at 1200 rpm at 50mph.

My wife likes it very much...so do I :D

The dealer gave me 12 months Puegeot warranty, 12 months mot, new tyres, and a service.
