Feel for you mini, but at least it was outside. Guess you could really do without the hassle at this time of year too.
steve_earwig wrote:Looks like anything from July 2001 but I reckon they'd have fixed the problem by the time of the recall in May 2003 (I'd still like to know how to check though, but I know for a fact Pug have no records for my car since selling it :frown: )

Anyone that knows for sure, see if you can spot what marks the mechanics left on the affected part to say it's been done (e.g. I know mine's had the MAF/TPS earth mod 'cos there's some white paint on it)
I'd not heard about this problem directly before - certainly makes you think! Like the others, I'd like to know if mine's been done / needing done / updated so it doesn't need it. (This last is less likely, as mine was registered in November 2002).

Any clues on how to find out?

Im contacting peugeot by email, saying a friends car has went on fire (all us 406 owners are friends), and see what info it digs up on recalls.
I did know for a fact the 307 was prone to self combust.

See if you can find out from them the range of build codes that were affected.

If yours has been done (sounds like it's a dog had his 'nads cut off :? ) we'll need you to pull your grill of and see if they marked the motor in some way.

Wasn't it the fact that water would get into the electrical box of tricks for the radiator fan and find a permanent live, short it, etc etc........

I think Mini might have to be careful here, he bought the car at 3 years old and could have easily missed the recall due to the ownership change, also he's never been near a dealer with it so the car effectively disappeared off the planet. If the insurers get wind of a missed recall they might not be best pleased?

It might pay us to edit any references to this in these posts?

You don't think they'd check for themselves? I don't know whether the onus for recalls is on the owner or the manufacturer.

But they can only try to contact you about it, they're not exactly going to hunt you down like Britain's most wanted :|

But are owners supposed to contact the manufacturer to check every time they buy a second-hand car? I've never heard of anything like that...

Good point, it'll probably just be put down to 'one of those things' and filed away :|

heres what i have sent:
Hello, i have had a friend who owned a 2002 406 with the multiplex wiring go on fire about a week ago, i have since become aware that there was a recall for something to do with the potential of the cars going on fire, would it be possible for me to check if my car another 02 406 hdi ever received the recall. The reg is ou02***, and the vin is VF38***************.
Hopefully it will either shed some light onto the recalls or return a useless email.

Hiya guys,
The salvage company (co part) wont be picking the car up until next week at least! Christmas indeed! Whose bloody idea was that then????
I could do with it being gone and away from me asap. Its just a constant reminder to what happenend, and my wee 3yo lad is really quite traumatised by the whole experience.
On the bright side, they list the cars value on their website at £1800. Is that right?? What is the book value for a 2002 exec Hdi with 118,000 miles?
Welly- keep yer mooth shut til someone answers and we can then reveal the true cost of 5 years 406 motoring!! :supafrisk:

What are the 3 wires to the dipping mirror for? I presumed a pos and neg, whats the third? +12vdc for the lights???

It has been a very bad day today.

The RAC guy diagnosed valve hits piston syndrome this afternoon. I can't afford to have the engine refurbished. If anyone needs a brand new alternator for a 1.9 diesel 1997 model it's there for the taking. It's parked at Bryn Cars next to the MOT garage in Bryn near Wigan. If anyone turns up, say Stuart sent you and quote my phone number 07903577967 Guy's name is Mike.

I got a reply from peugeot, unfortunatley they are useless:

Dear Professor Einstien

Thank you for your recent enquiry made via the Peugeot website.

I am sorry to hear about the incident with your friend, I hope that the issue is getting dealt with and will be resolved soon. I can confirm that your vehicle (VIN: VF38***) has no out standing recalls on it and have never had any recalls done. If there is anything else I can help with please do not hesitate to reply.

Kind regards

Robert Talbot

So someone else ask peugeot to see what they get back.
Also ignoring my name as i like to quietly take the piss with these things, look whos working for peugeot a mr talbot, PSA dont shuffle their staff round right, MR peugeot is working for citroen.

why isnt mr talbot asking them to put his name back onto cars.

Well this morning i am left with no decent car, except the keys to some thing called a nissan, which has a flat battery. Yes thats right japanese reliability this morning is a complete myth, an 8 year old french diesel has started while a 2008 nissan primera with 25k on the clock, and a petrol failed to start.

I can't seem to find anything in the UK for checking, other than asking the manufacturer :frown: Plenty in the USA of course

Here's the thing: just because the manufacturer has a record that the recall has been done this is no guarantee that it has...
