Get yourself a D9 V6 estate, from 2000. Means you don't get the higher tax (introduced on cars built after March 2001, plus you don't get COM2000 woes), and you get a honking great V6 engine to put a grin on your face. Plus all the luxuries of an Executive trim car.
2002 (D9) Peugeot 406 Coupe SE, 2.2 litre Petrol. Scarlet Red/Rouge Ecarlate/Rosso Scarlatto. Black Leather interior. SOLD :(
2008 (E60 LCI) BMW 525i M-Sport, 3.0 litre Petrol. Carbonschwarz Metallic. Black Dakota Leather and Myrtlewood interior.

that sounds like a nicer choice than a diseasel, v6s would take an lpg kit well, so you could get all the benefits of a v6, plus the fuel economy of a derv without its noise.

Mine is £175 tax, 40 mpg+, but the look on other drivers faces is absolutely priceless.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I need to save some pennies first, I doubt the tubby is worth much at all now. Still I have a running car and that's the most important thing!

i like the way your thinking of an estate and not going mad and thinking you need one of these:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ogcode=flp
they are a bit excessive, the estate is the sensible persons choice.

a chelsea tractor:

there is some jeeps immune from this improper use in urban areas, the small suzuki is generally avoided because of its ride quality, and the toyota hulux doesnt seem to get used inappropriately, and nor does the mighty defender. But the main problem with all the big jeeps is they really do get through fuel quicly, the petrol ones are not even worth looking at, and the diesels at the best of times get 30mpg.
