the big man that dave never shows was jason dawe he never said a lot especially in the news sections where now the banter is mighty
i cant really accuse top gear of being as biased towards german cars as auto express jeremy might like the golf a bit too much but thats about as bad as it gets

More likely because he can't perform live. Have you ever seen the Used Car Roadshow from ITV? I've never heard a live TV presenter say "umm" or "ah" so much where he can't think of anything to say...
