I started work in 1987 in an office and I always remember my monthly take home was £187.00
Back then though you could have a *very* good night out, and a Taxi home for £20.00.
I saved up £600.00 quite quickly with me cycling to work until I passed my driving test and bought the shittest P-reg VW Golf you've ever seen.........thinking about and knowing what I know now it was crazy but then no-one in my family really knew about cars - I guess that's what sparked my interest in second-hand motors
Cars in my care:
2021 Kia Spottage 1.6 Pez Turbo Dual Clutch Gearbox Trickery
2013 Renner Twingo - donkey work
I can't really remember the prices of petrol, I know I used to put a 'fiver' in and it would go for days on end I do know one thing though, the price of petrol was never ever an issue like it is today
The internet's just told me petrol was 0.37p/ltr in 1987, would have been 4-star

When I first started driving back in 2007, petrol was under £1 per litre. It's gone up by 40p per litre since then, so a 40% increase in the last 5 years.
Road tax for my Coupe back in 2007 would have been £205 per year. It's £245 per year now, up £40 per year since then, so just under 20% increase in the last 5 years.
MOT price in 2007 was £50.35 according to Direct.gov, and is now £54.85, just under 9% more expensive than it was in 2007.
Car insurance isn't as easy to chart the price of, owing to the fact that the thieving bastards make it up as they go along, but if you look at average car insurance prices, they were 30% higher last year than they were the year before.
Bloody pathetic, isn't it - just makes you want to scream.
2002 (D9) Peugeot 406 Coupe SE, 2.2 litre Petrol. Scarlet Red/Rouge Ecarlate/Rosso Scarlatto. Black Leather interior. SOLD
2008 (E60 LCI) BMW 525i M-Sport, 3.0 litre Petrol. Carbonschwarz Metallic. Black Dakota Leather and Myrtlewood interior.
£25 I give to my perents lodge (Dosen't bother me, I expect to pay it. Infact they save it up for me)
£75 goes in an ISA towards my insurance/ car maintenance.
So I manage to live on about £85 a week. £50 - £70 in diesel and car parking costs dosen't leave me with much else to play about it.
Just a good job I don't drink or smoke cause then I would be up a creek without a paddle!
Think I'l give inland revenue a call now.

......how I laughed as I sloshed in that green stuff with gay abandon
These days I can be seen crying in pain as I gingerly wait for the very last drip to fall from the nozzle into my possession
Must be an agonising dilema trying to work out whether it's evaporating faster than it's dripping from the nozzle
(They're now going to graft nasal hair onto BP petrol delivery nozzles - just as the last drop or two is about to drip of the end, you'll hear a loud sniffing noise).....
