But you said you had miles of the stuff!!

Pc - my house
Laptop - her house

Distance about 10 km

Tbh I wasn't sure if you were being serious or not. And before anyone mentions waveguides or microwaves, it's on the other side of a hill.

Ah. I thought it was in the same house!!!!
Get yourself an adsl router Steve, It saves a lot of buggering about, & you'll have a hardware firewall!
I can talk you through configuring it :)

Even with this weird phone number business?

Apart from not actually having a pot to piss in, my other problem with this is: what next? I go out and buy an adsl router and finally get to go online but what could go wrong next? Oh, there's some sort of issue with the soundcard so I need one of them, then there's conflicts with god knows what else and in a few short weeks I realise that it would have been cheaper to buy a new pc... I think I'd prefer not to go down this road.

Well with ADSL it doesn't dial a number as such; the VPI/VCI initialises the circuit to your ISP.
Check your PM.

I can't see why it needs to dial a number either, I just got into the wirless router and I can't find any mention of a phone number - stranger and stranger.

Incidently, I just popped to the one and only computer shop in town to buy an ide ribbon cable 'cos I've pulled the old one around so much lately (do not want further issues with dual-boot) that the secondary connector's come off... was 24Kn (£2.47). That's a flat cable, none of your aerodynamic nonsense. They also do a basic ADSL router for 287Kn (£29.57). A quick price comparison with Scan - 80p and £17.61.

You wouldn't. On the WAN connection page it'll have a box for VPI and VCI. If you're using a usb modem you put these in the phone number field separated by a comma.

Patience? That's something I've never been accused of having before!

You know, I did think that by now I'd be telling you guys to shove your windows disks in the bin, instead I've had all my worst fears confirmed. Ever since I've had windows I've always thought that I should be giving Linux a go but looking at it it's always looked hopelessly compilcated and my idea of a Linux user is, basically, a computer geek. And I've found that Linux is indeed hopelessly complicated, Fedora also seems to be hopelessly, erm, hopeless and absolutely not geared up to anyone without a degree in computing. The bods on the forum seem unwilling or unable to talk down to me and I feel like I'm too stupid to merrit any help. It's like I've come up on this forum and said I've just bought a V6 24v, I only know how to ride a pushbike so can someone please tell me how to open the door?

And.... relax.

I just had to manually configure the network card - IP, DNS, Gateway an' all that bollocks. I've got no literature for the modem but it was a piece of pi$$ to find it on the 'net. It's dead obvious now but I really haven't done anything like it before and I thought the modem was the problem!

The number? All I can think is my windows is set up wrong because it's got it in there but it's meaningless. I won't be trying to fix it tho, for obvious reasons

And the odd thing is, I didn't tell my girlfriend because I didn't think she'd have the slightest idea what I was talking about, so I just said I was having "computer trouble". Over lunch I told her it's a new operating system and I was one step closer to shoving windows in the bin and she said "oh, so you won't be wanting this Vista disk our computer guy's given me."
