Re: carburettor help
its not too bad. The hard work was adapting the jeep and gearbox to take the bigger engine. I have the new clutch, the su carb, and good wiring ready for the next engine. I need to fill the gearbox with oil for sure dont want to break it.

Re: carburettor help
with the engine clapped out i had a look at the carburettor:

its a good thing, like new inside, all the seals are fresh.
Its even better when compared to the old carburettor with all its over complicated emissions crap:

Re: carburettor help
A bit of very crude engineering, i started to add the snorkel on the jeep, i havent finished as the drill is dead, and i had to cut the hole with a small drill bit doing many holes in a set circle as opposed to the easier and quicker hole cutting bit:

the end is facing down but i wont keep it like this, ill go and buy a proper snorkel top:

it will look better when caked in an inch of mud:

a question though, i need a bit of flexible air piping to do an ackward angle from the hard piping in the bulkhead to the air filer box, and then another bit from the box to the carb. Whats the cheapest stuff to use for this?

What about some of that tin tubing for extractor fans?

Re: carburettor help
tin tubing, looks good but the jeep seems to have remains of that from the original setup:

its a bit brittle, but i suppose its heat proof.

Re: carburettor help
ah i see a good few bits on ebay now much cheaper.
A question about doing this, will moving the place where air comes in so far away, would an engine run ok, could this rob it of power? Suppose thats the price to pay for being able to drive through water deeper than the roof, you know the way you do it all the time.

Re: carburettor help
FP the tubing for the snorkel shouldnt rob too many horses from the engine, it looks a good size for a 1.6 engine as an example the recommended size for the land rover 2.5 tdi engine is 67mm internal diameter for the snorkel to avoid air starvation of the engine, i reckon a decent filter top on there and all will be well,
maybe a cyclone top? the idea behind those is they swirl the air in a "cyclone" to enable it to flow better down the snorkel but then again i think once you introduce a few 90 degree bends and the like any effect from a cyclone would be minimized, i think you will be fine with just a filter top attached after the bends at the top, after all we arent going for pretty here are we
by the way im very jealous of your project, i really miss my muddy days out already

Re: carburettor help
it sure isnt pretty anything done to the suzuki is as cheap as possible especially since its an
old rusty jeep. its all just for fun
here is the sort of top ive been looking at:

Re: carburettor help
The one you have been looking at is a similar thing to a cyclone top, but you are still going to need some sort of filtration in the system somewhere to stop too much crap getting into the engine when its dry and dusty, during the rainy seasons then you only have to worry about a few blobs of mud, flies, leaves and such etc etc
but in the summer if its dry and you are out and about round the fields it will collect and suck in all sorts of crappy dust, I know the snorkel top advert says it has a cleaning effect on the air but if it was me, i would look into something extra to stop the dust.

Re: carburettor help
you mean an air filter?
the snorkel doesnt go directly into the carb, in fact all ive done is sent the snorkel into the air filter box which has now been moved to the left wing where the wheel jack is supposed to be but its not needed as there is a forklift.
here is the air filer box:

the snorkel is now finished and in typical home made style its not perfect, it robs some passenger foot space:

but its not too bad on visibility:

the wiper can still get past:
.
guess where this came off:

but i dont think i need any special thing apart from a normal snorkel top, the air filter can do the rest of the work.

Re: carburettor help
Ah i see now, i thought you were going straight to the carb with the flexi you were looking at, as you are not then it will be fine with just the bends on it the snorkel top is purely optional .

shouldnt do it much harm? ill need the mushroom top or else water would sit in here for ages.
