Re: thinking of buying a 406 1.9td
well im going for one last curiousity look tomorrow, ill take it for a drive. if it feels solid i might offer him £500 for it lol. ive seen loads on trader with the same miles year and trim for £495. if he offered me £300 and my car, id probably do that......but that aint gona happen. if i get the test drive on my own, i may nip it to kwik fit or a local garage and have them take a look, see if its any good. like i said, its got a recent mot, and long tax so it cant be too bad. just the small problems put me off. and for the sake of an extra £1000, i can get a much nicer, more recent hdi with lower miles and a service history up to date, and more to the point a bit more peice of mind.

You could just be swapping a load of problems that you know about for a load of problems that you don't know about. Tax, MOT, good tyres and exhaust: what more can you ask?
Unless you will definitely be running on veg I'd definitely have a HDi, either 90 or 110. If registered after March 2001 then the tax is £130 rather than £210 per year.
Most of the unreliability you hear about may be aimed at the 1.6 (which is in the 407, but not the 406) and has very different power and torque characteristics to the 2-litre HDi engines.
I think that for that money I'd be looking for something like this

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Hdi is the way to go ithink,
But the insurance is alot more expensive than the older ones that run on veg oil,
the one ive got is the Expensive tax band too but theres no Fap to worry about on that or all that Multiplexed comms stuff,
iwill keep with the older Hdis me thinks,

Re: thinking of buying a 406 1.9td
my 02 hdi has the lower tax band and despite the difference in insurance groups when i look for quotes the hdi is the same as a xud car.
Multiplex is nothing to worry about, just avoid cars with dodgy electrics, and the indicator stalk will either have gone, or will go

He's right,
My D8 L DT causes my insurance to be £70 higher over the Focus.
A 2.0 Rapier HDi is £98 more expensive.
Not much when you consider it's £1200 to start with

up here where the 406 is commonly known as The Taxi.. the Premiums are Sky high,
Mine went up £198 this year, thats the Totting up process of the insurers, caused by 50% personal injurys and 17% crash for cash scams,
TBh icouid buy anice High powerd beemer and insure it alot cheaper but ilike the 406 ive sort of Molded into it now, idont think icouid part with it,

Re: thinking of buying a 406 1.9td
well, 2 weeks on and im still osessed with getting this pug 406, its like have little demons on my shoulder, one says, it has long mot so cant be in bad nick, it sounded good, has good tyres, looks likeits been looked after, service stamps up to 93k, few months tax and i can get it plus £150 for my car, which at the moment on some days feels like its dying. on the other hand its 3 years older than my current car, the blowers only work intermittantly (could be an easy fix) it has 160k miles, id have to use the £150 for a new cam belt and even thenit may need the kit and not just a belt so id be dipping into my own pocket, tax is £100 a year more than mine, insurance is about the same but if i swap it my initial deposit would be £110. i could save up and get a hdi, newer, or some other diesel, but i want an old one so i can run it on veg oil, i love doing my own servicing so id change the oil and filters straight away, also the glow plugs. i love taking something thats getting near the end of its life and giving it a second chance. i only do roughly 4000 miles a year so i could potentially have it for the next 10 years, im only 27 but i dont care what people think if im driving a 15 year old car especially if im driving it for free
if anyone can give me a really good argument to get it, ill go and get it this week lol. im basically looking for an excuse to buy it really. i just hate the hassle of swapping insurance etc.
also LOZZ, were you a member on the jinlun forums by any chance?

Re: thinking of buying a 406 1.9td
Its a cheap chinese bike but with a good engine. Had one years ago. I guess i am a window shopper at the mo. Im just too worried that ill get it and end up having to spend a fortune on it. I cant live without air con. And im not sure if it works. I love diesels and ive missed having one. I know these pug engines will go on forever. And itll run on veg oil. Even at netto its 1.18 a litre which is still cheaper than the pumps. I have a mate who goes to marrons cash and carry and can get itc for about 40p a litre from him. Plus im friendly with the local chippy
like someone else said. I could be swappin problems with my car that i know about. For problems that i dont. Or i could end up with a corker of a car that i can run for peanuts which would out weigh the higher tax cost. The heater on it worked if i held my finger on that speed slider control thingy? Is it a big problem to fix? Any opinions would be great. I just know that ill feel regret if i dont get it. Especially if mine gets any worse. Im desperatly overdue a cam belt on my megane but at 230 quid plus the other jobs. And the great dirty dents on the bodywork. I think the deal ive been offered is good. Yhe pug is in his clearence car section so i assume others have been put off the high miles and hes had trouble shifting it. And my car is more saleable.

Re: thinking of buying a 406 1.9td
Tbh, yan ithink if the Trader is offering you some cash in the Deal thats pretty good,
its Normaly the other way Round,.
Altho it couid be a Authur daley type chap thats Trying to offload a big pile of shite thats been sitting on his fourcourt /yard taking space and Sick of the site of it,
Might be a Honest car but my view is Diesel cars are More saleable than a Petrol car,
even old 406 dervs sell quick. sorry but Megs are a bit of a Donkey they can be hard to sell yours might be clean tidy and good but there not as good a seller as a pug derv 406,
ive seen Clean megs as new as 01 reg fetching less than £500 .
iwouid test drive the 406 before shaking hands on a Deal it dont sound right a trader handing over cash in a deal to me,
they Normaly ask for £150 minimum to do a deal just to level the books out,

Re: thinking of buying a 406 1.9td
I think hes a pretty honest seller. Been trading 40 years in same place. No pressure when u go look around. He has another megane same year as mine. Lower spec for 1500 quid. Think ill take it for a drive. What do u think to the blowers? They would come on and go off as they pleased. But if i held my finger on the speed control slider it stayed on? Someone has had the carpet up on the passenger footwell so its onviously been looked into. And the air recirc motor was clicking so thats probably knackered but im not too bothered about that as i dont really use it now in my car. Is the a/c a problem in these cars? As i dont think i can live without it. Its a god send when i come out of the red hot office to my red hot car. Few mins with that on and its icy cold. Any other problems etc? Been quoted 125 for cam belt change. Not the kit tho. Other than that it looks mint. Needs a new bulb on the dash cos u cant see the miles covered etc. Do these have a trip display for the mpg etc its an s reg. 1998 i think

Re: thinking of buying a 406 1.9td
Don't talk yourself into a lemon mate. There's so much pointing towards this car being a pup at the mo. As Lozz says, dealers usually want at least £150 so one that's willing to offer money for a hard to shift car (he's right, Meganes never have been strong sellers unless they're Scenics) is doing it for a reason. You're thinking it's a good deal because you get money back on your car (which you probably already know you may struggle to sell privately) & you have this nagging thought in the back of your head that you'll be getting the better deal. Not going to happen. If the dealer has been trading for 40 years in the same place, he hasn't been successful by giving anything away.
Also, you've already said that the footwell carpet has been up so the blower problem has been looked into - if it wasn't fixed at the same time, it means it's either going to be an a**eache to fix or an a**eache to diagnose.

He will most probs Hand you some cash,
Ask you to sighn a Disclaimer, this is a Traders escape Route,
it will most probs say on the Disclaimer this is a Unroadworthy vehicle,
he can then write off the Tax mans fees, car sold for scrap, he will put,
Then that Waves your right to complain when it Clamps out as youve sighned the disclaimer,
Ask any car trader about the Unroadworthy Disclaimer form and they will tell you all about it,
They will never give you a good deal its the oposite way round,
