It's done 1800 miles and burned 2.5 litres of oil...
Fiat won't touch it till it's done 5000 miles cause it's 'Breaking in'.
I started kicking up a fuss at the dealer (red mist descended).
They give me 5 litres of oil and told me to piss off...

Got home and realised it was 10w40 semi synth and I needed 5w40 fully synth... So made another trip and got the oil I wanted...

Free 5 litres of 10w40 though

The Alfa used to burn oil but it was by design.
Assumed Fiat petrols were like that?

Insurance is cheaper for a BMW E46 330d than a 2.2 HdI COupe. Go figure?

I love all recent and past Alfa for their looks (no, not the Mito, that isn't an Alfa at all).
Before getting my 406 I was considering a 166 restyling 2.4JTD. That's astonishing performance, sadly fuel consumption figures were too high, and I never heard of one of those doing more than 120000 miles (weak turbo brakes too oten). I could get one with half the mileage of my 406 and better specced for less money, but I just couldn't afford to own a car that leaves me on feet twice a year. And it burns at least 5 rear lights bulbs a year.
That's sad, cause it's an astonishing ride (much better than a 406 for performance, and not much worse in confort).

My uncle and auntie are both solid Alfa-ists :D Over the years they have had:

Of course they all had their own niggles but they were all such lovely cars when they worked. I can honestly say I have yet to be in a car that is as refined, has an interior as good as the 166 or matches it for road-holding capabilities (considering its size). It was just an incredible car. They've all been amazing! I love Alfas to the core.

Alfa/Fiat group make some stonkingly awesome diesels. Although their new "Multiair" petrol units are brilliant tech - especially the 2cyl in the 500!

Although the Multipla Cab I had in Rome was hillariously awesome. Never seen/been in one before - so very cool! :cheesy:

I prefer HDis actually - comparing my 133hp 2.2HDi to my gf's 120hp 1.9MJT there are a lot of differences: (mind my car has 200000kms and 10 years, her's 30000 and 3 years)
- The HDi is much more quiet and sounds better
- The MJT is crap under 1500 rpm, where it kicks your *** with immense torque. At 1400 you feel nothing, at 1600 you feel like
- The HDi is lovely, meaning that acceleration is much more smoother. You don't get the "OMG how much powa!" feeling, and this is a cons, but because of this it is more confortable to use, and has more grunt under 1500rpms
- With the MJT you can't go under 1200rpm in 4th/5th gear, with the HDi i do that all the time at 50-60km/h in 5th, which is the city limit here. With the MJT i'm forced to use te 4th gear.
- The HDi runs out of puff a little later
- The HDi is less fuel hungry (my gf's car, with me driving, does around 1,5km/l less than my old 406) despite the age and faulty fuel pump

EDIT: I could remap my HDi to around 180HP, the MJT needs 2 turbos to get that kind of power!

Peugeot diesels engines have always been before their time.
Take the XUD for instance, 1970's engine, and they didn't stop fitting them in cars until the early 2000's.
The 2.0 HDi is based on the XUD too, the block itself is based on the XUD9 and stuff like the sumps etc are swappable.

XUDs were rugged and simple. That was their enduring feature. Mine seemed to eat glow plugs every winter but never let me down!

Speaking of old school 70s, what about an Opel Manta?

I would love another XUD powered Pug but the £2000 I've been given apparently all of it, or a fair chunk of it has to go towards a car :(
For the first time theres a good few 1.9TD Executives on Autotrader, but they person who give me the money wouldn't be happy if I only spend £700 on a car.

Thought: 2 grand is likely to buy you something that's just starting to have major issues, while 700 quid will buy you a car that's already had them.
