Re: My New Car
Still a lot of Skodas about.
There was one parked up the Castlereagh Road the other day, the wer doing speed checks. Luckily I was in her Hyundai which has a top speed of about 30mph, so didn't speed.
See the odd mk1 Vectra sometimes too, usually armoured. Must cost too much to replace.
Astras around South Belfast, Castlereagh area, they must be demonstrators as this is the HQs beat. All English reg. so must be registered straight from Vauxhall. Either that, or an exchange with London, they get a few dozen armoured Land Rovers now we've cut back on rioting, and we get some Astras to try and look normal.

Oil change, Oil change, Oil Change..... dont cut corners, forget vauxhall's schedules of 20,000 miles with 5w/30 semi synthetic, Use a good quality fully synthetic 5w/30 low ash (long life) oil every 6k to 10k (depending on driving styles) use a oil flush before changes, difference is £40 per oil change or £1400 for a low milegae engine swap every yearToddM wrote:OMG mate its so quick and frugal coupled to that 6-speed!Will see how long it lasts though!

Re: My New Car
The old 406 saloon ihad,
the oil did 32k before it was changed, Didnt do it any harm, but its not good
for what it costs for oil iaree 5k is a good time to renew it,
inoticed after changing the oil in the pug the Mpg went up, and the turbo was alot quieter,
iguess if you intend on keeping your turbo intact then regular oil changes are the way to keep that quiet

Re: My New Car
but if i had the money id love one, i suppose where on something like a suzuki you just need a socket set to do the timing belt an alfa requires an engine hoist to take the engine out.

i love it !
ive serviced a few taxis this summer and the oil was like tar, it makes good creosote for my fence thinned down with some diesel,
so it didnt go to waste,
Theres no Emisions testing on diesels so they can get away with not changing there oil for 10yrs asupose

Re: My New Car
an old non turbo diesel like my dads carina could have got away without getting the oil changed in a long time, on newer cars youll wreck the turbo too easy and its a fairly important component.
I heard GM put an engine into a cadillac that could run without having a service for 100,000 miles, and you could drive it in the desert without water.

Re: My New Car
trouble is when the centre turbo bearings let go they also wreck the oil seals, and in some cases that much oil passes the seals and gets into the engine that you turn the ignition off and the engine continues to bounce off the rev limiter running purely on engine oil thats passing by the turbo oil seals, you cant switch the engine off !! as we know all a diesel needs to run is a hot engine, compression & fuel, your oil pump becomes a fuel pump
i bought a ford mondeo TDCi with 4 bent conrods because of this, engine reved that hard untill the sump emptied it destroyed the engine
(i knew the engine & turbo was knackered)

Renault dCi's suffered runaway engines due to oil passing through worn turbo seals.

Re: My New Car
Nissan Navaras with the D22 engines would bend their conrods. The old man knows from first hand experience
Nissan and Renault are "in alliance" so I'm not sure if it is a related engine.
