Not being funny but how the hell would you know about bringing children up when you have none of your own - just sayin'.

It is not worth MY money to repair it.

But as I say, if you want to have a go - you're bloody welcome to it.
I think the kids comment is totally out of order. Where did it even come from?
I don't have kids and I don't plan to have kids within the foreseeable future. Why? Because before I plan to have kids I want to make sure that both the Girlfriend and I have secure jobs and a good place to live and we can afford the baby without relying on the Government. Christ I'm 21 and dying to buy a house. Clearly I've done something right. I've got mortgage advisors and estate agents calling me 2-3 times a week dying to do business, they know how good of a position me and my other half are in.

I have no issues with 'benefits'. I think they are superb! I'm not dissing you for being on benefits at all. After all I have no idea about your background or why you're on them.
I have a couple of friends who are seriously ill. They try their hardest to get jobs but when they do they always end up in hospital for a week or two and they get let go. Without Disability benefits they would be stuck in their house all day every day with no money or no transport.

But...
If you can't afford to spent £1000 on a car Sonia how on earth are you planning to afford this extra kid of yours?
A car isn't essential for you. Your other half drives.
I don't get why your making such a fuss over this car. YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE A BLOODY DRIVING LICENSE! :frown:

I speak for many of the forum members who agree with me because sh*t doesn't make sense.

And Sonia I would love to get your HDi off you because I'm sure I could make a fortune on it. But the likely hood is when I'd spent 50p and a few man hours getting it sorted I would like it and struggle to get rid
There's also the hassle of storing it, finding a place to work on it and getting it back to mine.

Sell the HDi and lets see how long it is before something goes wrong on the petrol one again. Jesus, these things are old now. They're going to break!

I totally agree with Sam and i think he stated what he had to say in a very clear and
precise way . Also where did children come into this did i miss something ??
Sonia i think you buying the HDI was a result of reading posts on here about re-maps, de-faps
torque extra mpg and realising there was not a lot you could do with the petrol one the
HDI seemed a better choice , cheaper to improve thus you rushed into buying the one you have .
I dont know if you thought you were going to end up with a ferrari estate you could try and make your
ex jealous with where as in truth you would end up with a very comfortable cruiser with a little
extra oomph to add a bit of excitement . As i have already said buy in haste repent at leisure .
I too excist on benefits so when something needs doing on my car, which is getting on for 14 yrs
old , i have to prioritise , gas & electric bills water rates food etc have to come first as Sam was trying
to point out and yes he is right 14 yr old cars do tend to need more in the way of maintenance , mine
for example needs rear disc's pads shoes , front drop links front disc's and pads and thats the order they
will be done in as soon as i can afford . Old cars are high maintenance and i would have thought by now
you would have realised that , lets be honest without the help of some generous members on here i
doubt you would have a car on the road , sell it and use the money wisely ie driving test .

By the way Sam is not stupid

My take on this:

SORN the HDi, and park it for a while until the Christmas financial blues clear away. You seem to have space on your driveway for two 406s, so it'll likely be fine where it is (I don't have a house, or a driveway, so you're sorted on that front). Don't fret about paying to get it roadworthy. Keep your petrol car roadworthy, as it's the simpler of the two (diesel engines are full of all sorts of wizardry and high-pressure pumps and expensive bits, whereas petrols are simple and more tolerant).

While your HDi is off the road, you can then do it up at your leisure, and either use it or sell it once it's road-legal and has an MOT. You will not be able to sell a car at its proper value unless it has recently passed an MOT. Diesel-engined cars are "in" at the moment, so that car's worth a couple of grand in working order - flogging it off for £300 in non-roadworthy condition isn't doing you any favours at all, especially if all it'll take for a pass is a remap and some brake parts. Remap it down to stock performance (sans-FAP, as that's been physically removed), replace the tailgate and the brake discs and pads yourself, MOT it, and then take it up to Jasper for the clutch replacement once it's got its ticket. THEN decide whether to use it or sell it.

CJ expressing an opinion is not slagging someone off , posting on here is going
to result in people posting replies and expressing an opinion and sometimes
those replies may seem a little harsh but it is only a personal opinion .

I'm not loaded; far from it. I worry about money too. More than some, but not as much as others. I consider myself fortunate, but not well-off. I know I don't have much left over this month, it'll be a close one.

Fixing up that car can be done cheaply, and over a length of time. Given Sonia was originally fretting about money over Christmas, the option of leaving it to fix up after the post-Christmas financial blues have gone away seemed like a good call, which is why I suggested it. She could even make a profit if she does sell it on, depending on the parts/labour spend fixing it up. She seems handier with the spanners than I am, so changing the discs/pads seems reasonable enough.

To be honest this car should have come up to me before Christmas for fixing up, I probably screwed up the situation by saying I didn't want the car hanging about for weeks....in truth it wouldn't have because I could have got stuck into it and sorted it....business is crap this time of year.
I always said I would have donated my labour....I even have a spare rear window that I offered.

Anyway, I'm not slagging anyone off, just stating fact!

I know I can be a bit crusty at times, but I'm getting on a bit so you have to excuse me

I hear you. I need a new rear tyre (possibly two) and all the rear suspension parts checked, because I'm getting uneven tyre wear. 19in tyres aren't cheap, which is entirely my fault as the car came with 16in wheels. That, and the tell-tale clonking noises from the anti-roll bar droplinks. Front top-mount bearings are also shot. I also reckon my shocks/springs are worn. And the car is due for a service. It's all waiting for the end of the month, when payday beckons. 25 days is a long time when you're praying your car won't fall apart!

If Sonia can do the discs + pads swap, replace the tailgate, and remap the car back to stock, then the only thing seriously wallet-threatening is the clutch replacement - which she might not need to do immediately if remapping back to stock power resolves the problem.

Kind folk on here (yourself included) are already offering her free/discounted parts, and Jasper is offering to help with the clutch swap. It won't be a free fix, but with the kindness people are showing on here, it won't be as bad as it would be if she had to pay for all the parts and labour from a garage.

Oh - re: the airbag/horn pad issue - I had this on my COM2000-equipped Coupe, and as it turned out, there was a wire being pinched by the horn pad itself. Because the wire was stopping the pad from going in far enough to trigger the horn, the horn wouldn't sound. Can't remember what the wire was responsible for. The garage removed the airbag, replaced the damaged wire, and put it back together so the wire wasn't trapped, and now it's fine. This was in early 2011.

God knows.

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones and get up on the moral high ground that's all I have to say.
I'm not even going to bother wasting my time or energy in replying to it.

All I will say is:

My life

My cars

MY DECISION.

I don't hold a gun to your head and make you read my posts and at least I was brought up with enough manors.
Don't have anything nice to say then you don't say it.

Someone has a lot of growing up to do, end of.

I can see why there are a lot of well respected members hating this forum, leaving and or not posting much.

Right now for me,
1st, CJ this is not a slaging match.
2nd, I'm sorry Sonia but I have to agree with Bailes & puggy & I take offence at lozz's comment...
We are not all loaded on here, in fact I would say most of us are scraping by :frown:

I work bloody hard, sometimes 16 hrs a day at work & six days a week, I own my own house, I am married with two young boy's 5 & 4. I'm 41 now & we had to wait untill we were in our 30's to get married, I was 35 before my first son was born, all due to finances  .
Before our first son was born we both worked in quite good job's & life was quite easy but we both worked bloody hard.
Once he was born we decided that my wife would stay at home to raise our boy, then boy's (lucky me :cheesy: )
Believe me we now know how hard it 'can' be, hence the reason I bought a 110 hdi cheep to buy / parts / easy for me to service / £140 a year road tax / 50 mpg.

Now I am not one to make judgements or cast aspersions.
But why oh why are you messing about trying to tart up & bling up two old car's in your situation.
Sorry but in my opinion, Five kid's & one on the way is it? (sorry I've lost count) single / on benifits & you haven't even got a full licence (I didn't know that) :? .
Get rid of both of them.
I started to draw my own opinion when you started to cover you car in tacky stickers / buy alloy wheels & then leather interior before sorting out all
the proper problems  .
Then as puggy say's you got all misty eyed over cheep 2.2 hdis / free d/faps & free re-maps on a old car with more than 170k on the clock,
it was bound to end in  .
In my experiance & I've had quite a bit power & speed come at a price, if done on the cheep it will go wrong or bang  .

And before those of you out there in cyber space start saying things,
I have been one of the first to offer Sonia help & advice, not much of it has been taken  .
This is just my opinion, & for what it's worth I think this has spiraled uncontrolably.

B.T.W, I had wondered how the hell a busy mum of five (as you used to go by) had the time to do over 1100 post's in a year + do all the pic's you do + mess about with cars, Now I know BENIFITS!.
2002 110 HDi estate, Rapier in monaco blue! ( found quite a bit more power :cheesy: ) SOLD I've sorted the airbag light :cheesy:
1998 3.0 V6 SE coupe in Diablo Red ( my baby ) sold
2006 206 1.4 16v sport in Aegean blue ( wife's shopping trolley  )

2006 BMW e61 535d m-sport :supafrisk: run's for cover

Last thing I have to say.

About 12 members have congratulated me on and off the forum for saying the truth.
Saying what everyone is thinking because everyone is scared too.

Obviously you are right Sonia and all 12 members... well 13 now and me who all agree with each other are wrong and I am the sole cause of old members leaving this forum.
