The amount of time that thing has been in bits  I suppose this is true of what they say...."Jap cars are great until they go wrong" :| I suppose it's good having all these sensors and stuff - you'll never hear a Jap Petrol engine 'pinking' for example but is it all really necessary in the end? I'm not convinced.

I've read before about the 1.6HDi snappy-off dippy before, so it sticks at the bottom of the tube and you have to get the sump off? :o sumps are sealed with non-setting gobbo now so you spend ages scraping that off for a start......

EMissions, emissions, emissions... Ok, there are too many cars to ignore what's coming out of their exhausts but all this extra expensive emissions junk they're foisting on us without testing properly is just stupid.

I've heard of the HDi dipstick thing before too, but that was the first time I'd seen it for myself. I was wondering what the problem was with a bit of plastic floating about in the sump, it wouldn't be able to get past the strainer but.. what strainer? I couldn't see one. And then there's the design of this tube, it turns two right angles at the bottom for some mad reason, so once the bit of plastic's stuck in there there's no way of getting it out again without taking the sump off and fiddling bits of wire up there. And yes, the gasket material looks like chewing gum, once Mika had taken the gazillion bolts and nuts off, he had to lever it at two corners, bending it worryingly. I dunno how he faired getting the stuff off as I had to go and pick the wife up, I bet it wasn't funny anyway.

How many pages now? Lordy!

Seeing as how it tipped down last night and the garden is a swamp, I thought I'd finally investigate my lack of redundant brake light switch wiring. I need this to fit cruise to my Pug and I've now had the stalk and switch (which I got from Stealthe :cheesy: ) knocking about for more than two years

Anyway, having not found the wire anywhere under the dash, I thought I'd see if it even leaves the ECU - it don't :(
Image

SEDRE says E4 on the grey connector (grey? All three are black :frown: ), I squinted at all the wires but didn't find it, so I took the cover off and E4 is empty:
Image
A, B, C, blank, blank, F...

Trouble is I don't even know if there's anything in the hole, I was hoping for an unused pin but I can't see squat. The one next to it, F4 (pressostat) checks out, so I think the diagram's ok.

That's as far as I was willing to take it apart (me, nervous? hell yes!), from my usual dealings with these sort of connectors sliding the green wedge out should release all the pins but it don't (you can see where I gave F4 a quick tug there). There are also 4 clips on the top of it but I'd need 5 hands...

What I really need is one of these connectors to play with. So, if anyone is going near the breakers and is willing to slip one in the post for me for some beer tokens, that would be grand :cheesy:

While I had the battery off I thought I'd also have a squint at the famous footwell connectors. They're quite easy to get to on the left-hooker:

Remove the bonnet release lever (1 long 10mm bolt)
Remove the kick panel (one long torx through the sill trim at the end, one 10mm bolt under the clutch)
Remove the sill trim (one more long torx about half way along, one 10mm nut at the top by the fuse panel, pull the bottom part upwards & the upright next to the kick panel towards the gear lever to release the clips)
Remove the kick panel support bracket (one 10mm nut):
Fold the carpet from the corner and there they are:
Image

Looking good:
Image
although it was just slightly damp under there  I pulled the connectors apart and sprayed them inside and out with Waxoyl. That'll learn 'em 8)

Hello again reader :cheesy: I've been having another look about to see if I can find anything useful on the ecu connectors (in between everything else I'm meant to be doing...) and it's occurred to me that I really ought to check that the ecu has the ability to run cruise (I'd look a right berk if I did all this and it didn't). So, out comes the PP2k for the first time evvarrr  Plug it in and... what is all this? I have no idea what I'm doing. I've read that I need to enable it in the ecu and the BSI but all I've come across is this:
Image

Does that look familiar to anyone? 'cos it's different to everything I've seen. If I double click the cruise I can set it to present. Double click it again and I can set it to missing  Abort, abort, abort!!!

Erm, am I doing it right?

I've never turned one on, but I think it works like this:

Function needs to be turned on, (present), in engine ecu and BSI - without the latter I think it will not 'see' the stalk/switches.

You should be able to verify operation of all the stalk functions and both brake switches on PP2000, though they seem to be spread over several pages and inconsistently from car to car - try driving parameters and BSI diagnostics........

If you want me to check any specifics on mine, let me know.

I suppose I was expecting it to make sense when I got in there but I couldn't make head nor tail of it. The ecu settings above is all I seemed to be able to get into that appeared relevant and nothing seemed to be saying "BSI this way".

Meh, I guess I'll have another crack at it before I ask for an idiot's guide

Oh, thankyou very much young man :cheesy: That must have taken a wee while

Hmm, that first screen looks familiar ok, but I'm fairly sure (that's not as sure as I was yesterday anyway  ) I didn't see anything for the BSI. I'll just have to give it another go tomorrow. This time with chair and table so it's not all balanced on my lap...

Hur hur hur. I guess it means the fan but... it's a bit of a daft name. It's probably another bum translation from the French (remember particular light?)

If you think you've got problems... :(

Lovely day today, a spot of hoeing (no, that's not a new way of saying visiting prostitutes  ) and a bit of Googling...

Ahem - http://www.molex.com/molex/products/dat ... USINGS.xml It's a Molex, I might have bluddy known

I've not broken out the laptop yet, I'll have to wait for the sun to move round behind the walnut so I can actually see the screen 8) Meanwhile, I think my hoe's probably fallen asleep :supafrisk:

My favourite is when I accidentally leave the sidelights on after I switch off the engine then open the door. The car pipes up to warn me that "Lights not on".

I've sussed it and I am a complete tit - notice how Eric's says "NOUVELLE 406" and mine don't?

Anyway, yes I can enable cruise in both the BSI and the engine ECU 8)

Image

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get a wire into that connector, across the engine bay, through the bulkhead and into the redundant brake light switch :frown:

Whilst I was in there floundering about, I thought I'd have a squint at the engine parameters because I'm sure it's not running as well as it should:

Image
I'm sure that's not right :(

Any further info?

Also:

Err... :?

I also spotted this:

Maybe that explains why they're all different?
