The 1.6 HDi in the 407 is supposedly the one that eats clutches for breakfast.

They came on the Taxi scene up here for a few months then they Fizzled out,
Seems the 406 is more Reliable,
Abreakers yard ivistited yesterday Also confirmed this, He said he carnt get Enough 406 parts to keep up with the Demand,
his Yard gets Flooded with Taxi drivers wanting 406 parts he had around 8 or 9 407s with just a few bits missing,
My guess is the 406 is a better car Arriston springs to mind

The 407 is a bit of a disappointment to drive compared to the 406...

It doesn't ride as well, nor feel as "nimble" through the corners. IMO - it was a serious step back from the previous car!

the 407s biggest problem is the loss of steering feel over the 406, even with more poweful engines its not as good to drive. and the 406 round these parts seems be be owned by old farmers who treat them like tractors going and they are still going, not being replaced by 407s.

Well the 407 1.6 HDI is £200 cheaper a year to isure than a 406 HDi 110 ?
I'm sure the 407 isnt £200 worse of a car?
Also tax is cheaper too.

Only things that scare me is the FAP and the DMF. I hate acronyms, they seem to cost a bomb :(

Sam the fap can be removed for under £100 the Dmf has been known to fail but mainly on the 2.0 136bhp, But like all other cars theres good cars and bad ones, on other peugeot forums theres more and more taxi-drivers replacing there 406's with 407's and are happy with them.
the 1.6 is better on fuel economy than the 2.0 and can easily be remapped up to the 136bhp of the 2.0 with increased torque as well.
As for handling and ride i'm obviuosly going to be biased but having owned both 406 and 407 i like the handling of the 407 better and can throw it into corners at speed which the 406 would lurch around and scare the pants of passengers, best bet is to have a test -drive to make up your own mind

Just my 2 cents: the 407 is far worse than the 406 in both looks and durability. The drive is somehow better on the 406 when it comes to feelings: the 406 is more "direct" and feels more natural, the 407 like most modern cars feels like she is driving you, not the opposite. All IMHO of course. Just test drive the cars you are going to buy and then decide for yourself. One thing I don't like about the 406 are the brakes, which aren't up to the car in my experience.

The other week I was at the dealer's for my AC and I heard my mechanic talking with a guy who saw a 407 for sale and wanted to replace his 406. The mechanic just kept saying that it wasn't worth it, he pointed at my 406 TD and said "Just look at it! The do not do cars like that anymore".

When I was getting my 406 I emailed a lot of dealer if they had one for sale. Well, most of them did not reply, but one of the few who did told me he had a HDi110 wagon and he kept it till last year to find a worthy substitute.

Me too
I think I mentioned elsewhere on the forum, where I was in Coventry a couple of weeks back, and a guy approached me whilst filling up at a BP garage, and said lovely colour, and I replied, she needs a good wash, he said he'd had two 406's and were lovely cars, he now had a 407. I said funnily enough, I was thinking of getting rid and buying a 407 myself, and he told me not to bother as the 406 was the better car!

I can live with changing the turbo, it's on the front top of the engine, so a fairly easy job :)

Does anyone know if it's the same engine as ford use in the Fiesta Zetec S etc?

You can pick up a recon turbo for ~£250. I can live with that :)

You're the only People who say bad things about them to be honest
306 Owners club say it's a great engine

Sam, the best advice i can think of to give you is to have a good search of forums and see what the 'common' issues are BUT bear in mind lots of people who join them have problems with there car, thats why they joined it. Try to stay unbiased but realise that forums can give the wrong impressions. IE; your 406 was crap and the focus is worse (reading your posts) but the reality is all things break. If 100,000 things are made and 1000 are duff does that make them all bad.....nope, but those 1000 people who bought a bad thing moan louder than the 99,000 that got a good one. Its just human nature, make your own mind up on looks, performance etc its your money but remember whatever you buy someone was sick of it enough to sell it!
also you might want to consider an aftermarket warranty if your worried.
