Have you driven any 407s yet Dave? If you haven't, don't write off the 2.0 HDi just yet. When the 407 first came out I was invited to the local dealer's launch at Thruxton & they had a small fleet of 2.0 HDis there for us to test drive (alone with no salesman) up the A303 & back again. The acceleration is impressive. I managed to hit a naughty speed before I even got off the sliproad to the 303 & I still had 6th gear to go!

Having looked at the figures, I'd say the 2.2 is easily the better choice with much better power & identical fuel economy, but finding a good one may be harder as they are the ones that may well have been thrashed or towing heavy caravans for most of their life so far.

I like the fact I can insure the 2.2 for the same as a 2.0
Fuel economy is similar
Vehicle tax is reasonable too

Should save £350 a year on insurance and tax before any fuel benefits
Hopefully with 170 on tap I won't have the urge to remap

The emphasis on 'hopefully' is, in my opinion, indicative of a predisposition to experiment. Persons displaying these tendencies will typically research the suject thoroughly, while publically maintaining they are opposed to making changes. Expressions like, '170 bhp is enough for anyone', or ' I wouldn't want to put more power through the front wheels', are to be expected. Privately, the intent is very different, e.g.

If On = 140 / 109, (where On = Oomph now)
= 1.2844
then Of = 173 x On, (where Of = Oomph future)
= :cheesy:

But
If Od = 176 / 136, (where Od= Doggy's 2.2 oomph)
= 1.2941
then Of = 173 x Od, (where Of = Oomph future)
= :cheesy: :cheesy:

This is, of course, a gross simplification. Many other facets will be under consideration.

To summarise,

Plod, with a 'standard' car is not a likely outcome.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)
