yup they are reliable, the engine outlasts the bodywork, just like Datsuns,

the modern transits use same engine as Mondeo,

the old transit was slow but was a good towing bus,

The old 2.5TD wasen't too bad of an engine. Had abit more torque making it a little more liveable. Although aint driven many older transits.

Escort vans on the other hand!
1.8D's are dangerous they are so slow! I did 50 motorway miles in one and I was pretty much flat out doing 70mph. I'd go uphill and It'd slow down to about 55/60mph. I drove 3 of them and they were all the same.
1.8TD's are great though! Sit at 70 all day long. Would love to have a little tune up of one :)

The models you drove probably were the later engine with the particle filter fitted. My mums 1991 1.8D LX mk3 5dr Fiesta would do 105mph, was very torquey and was easily as quick off the line as a 1.4 petrol, after 10 years of trouble free motoring and 160k miles the sills, front and rear arches rotted and I bought her another Fiesta, a 1.8D LX, this one however was a mk4 3dr, the engine was the same apart from the later engine has the particle filter and is as flat as a fart in a baked bean tin. Acceleration is sloooooowww and top speed is 90mph - and it takes a long time to get there. I have since blocked the EGR pipe and the throttle response is a bit better, but still nothing like as quick as her mk3 which has covered double the mileage.

They were later ones 52plates so yes they probably did have a CAT (Not a particulate filter, two seperate things).
I'd love to just turn the fueling up abit just to see how much of a difference it would make.

I had a two Escrote Vans for work, brand new, one was non-turbo and had to be thrashed horribly and the next was an 'Endura' TD engine and that was cool..........until I got done for doing 92 on the M1

I remember the 2.5D in the Fords well, they used to start instantly  literally first 'flick' of the key :o that engine also made an appearance in the Sierra

I have the 2.5 in my 1990 3 tonne campervan (if that's how you call it), it's really slow (top speed 75mph on flat ground, 90 downhill, tested! ) but it's fun to drive slow, it can take any gear it doesn't care, we did never do any kind of maintenance on it, it still goes perfectly and does about 25-30mpg which is not bad at all for that age, weight and the horrible aerodynamics (it's based on a transit but with the double bed over the cabin).
You feel more powerful driving a thing like that than driving a 200bhp hatchback. And the noise is amazing!

Yes! Of course it's not like a v12 but when you put your foot down the engine goes growwrr clunk bang! No acceleration at all but you scare pedestrians :cheesy:

Is the 2.5td engine from the Transit vans the same unit used in the 90s Granada/Scorpio TDs? Drove one of the frog-face Scorpios with 180k on a 2.5TD & went quite well. Don't know what the MPG was like though.

Everyone hated the Frog-face but I quite liked them :?

I think my 'reservations' about diesel engines stems from the 90's - I'm thinking about non-turbo Vauxhall Astras, Fords etc (non-turbo Pugs were ok) but they all left you feeling frustrated and slightly smelly. Even BMW/VAG were a bit slow bringing out Diesels but then Petrol was cheap and no-one even talked about MPG's much.

The fact was that back then Diesel = "Slow" and that was that, bit different now though, they reckon a BMW 535D is better than any Petrol engine in pretty much every respect, a multi-cylinder Diesel even sounds better than a Petrol engine now - who'd have thought it?

Depends on which frog-face you get. Standard models looked a bit oversized for the wheels like the first Mk3 Vaux Carltons did, but if you get the higher spec models with larger wider wheels it makes it look more normal. If you get one of the uber rare post 1996 facelift ones they look even better.

A friend had a 1996 Ultima with the Cosworth 24v engine. Bought it with less than 50k for £600. Sailed through the MOT & he sold it for what he paid 3 months later as he couldn't afford the petrol. Bought a 1.8 Astra & the fuel saving disappeared over the winter when he had to replace the back brakes.

I belive the 2.5TD was a Peugeot engine in the Scorpio Granadas and what not. The DK5 from the Peugeot 605 2.5TD! Based on the XUD10 engine :)
The Sierra never had a 2.5TD, it had a 2.3D which again was a Peugeot engine, XD2 I think it was called? Dreadfull lump!
