Nice one CJ. 8)

Looks very smart. Isn't it funny how no matter how careful you are and how good your new car is, you find lots to worry about as soon as it's yours.
I'm sure we all go through the same thing, plus as soon as you get rid of one, you're convinced it was faultless and would go on forever....
It looks really good and I'm sure it will be a good friend to you, once you get to know each other.

I know. There you are waiting for a kick-in-the-back and the next thing you know you're doing naughty speeds. The other thing is that you can't find where in the rev range it likes to be driven -- it's kind of happy everywhere. There's something going on down at about 1400 though but haven't worked it out yet. It does need to be kept above about 1800 to really get it moving though.

Yours is definitely a better starter than mine then. I'm at 4 to 5 cranks from a cold start, except if the glow plug light comes on in which case it's two. I notice the glow plugs come on at about 3 degrees whereas you never saw them on the 406 unless it was bitterly cold.

The sat-nav lady is definitely daughter-of-Gladys. Her catchphrase is at the fork. You might just have to turn her volume up; it's in there somewhere.

Rich, any ideas on the mild smoky-type smell occasionally? I remember having the same one in my first 406 as well but I seem to smell it more in this car.

None at all :? The smell of wood smoke is more common since wood burning stoves became popular. I tend to notice it as I find it quite sickly. But not so much round here. Really don't know what else it could be.

That's a good description if the occasional smell I get in this one, (and the previous 2.2), seems to only happen when hot, idling in traffic. I can't decide whether it's a tiny exhaust leak, (flexible maybe), or something else. (It's definitely not a dpf regen on either of mine).

It's almost like a wood burning smell rather than anything diesel-y/exhaust-y. I get it when travelling at speed as well... so might be different from yours. Mine just had the MOT and there were no advisories, so I guess the exhaust system is good.

Someone, somewhere suggested I could have something like leaves or vegetation of some kind trapped near the exhaust system somewhere - heating it up and emitting smoke? Will have gander when I get the time. Haven't even listed the bonnet since I bought it yet...

I misread that as "daughter-of-Glados", as in GLaDOS

Could the wood burning smell be nastiness sitting on the pollen filter, or by the internal recirc air inlet?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Has the 407 got 'automatic' recirculation? if so then every so often it will go into recirc and you'll smell something different.

Pollen filter is a good shout though.

I've no idea, Welly, but the idea is good. Need to figure out where the pollen filter and recirc flap is. Opened the engine bay for the first time and saw an odd collection of small leaves around one of the injectors... blew them away, so hopefully that's the end of that.

I just activated Gladys... dear Lord... I understand why she has been switched off!

Plugged in the PP2000 and the only faults it found is that BSI is moaning something about the engine oil level readings and the engine ECU cannot communicate with the automatic gearbox
