I've been looking around for new cars recently and inevitable it happened.
When I bought the Peugeot the only problem areas was the front drop links and front brakes.
3 months in, the front spring snapped so I replaced that, along with ABS sensor etc.
Pads and discs replaced.
Shortly after December the exhaust started to blow... the CAT. A nice expensive bit!
It was also puffing smoke from behind the engine.
I service it myself in Septerember.
I got a reasonable sum of £400 for with 1 weeks MOT and a few months tax. Its a shame as without those faults it would of great.
I didnt want to pay £650+ on to get it through the MOT to took it to a place that buys cars for cash.
The night before I won a MK2 Golf GTi!
Picked it up from Northampton and drove back 126 miles to Bristol without a fault, apart from shocking brakes and engine needs a service!.
Its not mint, body needs like claying 5 times and machine polishing in but the body it pretty tidy for a 20 year old car.
Engine still has suprising amounts of poke, even at 60+ due to close ratio box.
Needs new pads and discs all round and a service though.
I miss Power Steering, but you can buy a MK2 PAS racck and associated gubbins, so once its running well and stopping well ill look into that more.
Ill still poke around here, as my misses still has 406, as long as im welcome so ive gone and got a Glof ;0
Cheers guys

Aw that's a shame, still you haven't been happy with the 406 so I think we can forgive you
I'm a bit of a fan of the MKII Golf myself and sometimes when I'm bored I'll have a sneaky look at 'Volkswizard' sales website for a minter.....then I stop dreaming and carry on

Loved my Golf GTi, 8 valve 1.8, bought it for 100 quid as a scrapper, spent a grand on it to get it up to scratch.
If you have water inside the car when it rains or you wash it, the inner door panel seals need replacing and sealing up properly, it's so very common on the mark 2 Golf. The front engine mounting is a favourite problem as well.
I sold mine stupidly cheap just to get rid, I never used it.
Ah well! if only I had the will to get involved in another project.....can't get fussed about cars any more...too many years spent fixing the damn things
Anyway, enjoy your new toy, Bruce, I know you'll love it.

god I bloody love my golfs lol. Just swapped a minter midnight blue mk3 VR6 for the uglypug but it was eating me alive in petrol costs, and the pug lives on air.
500 miles a week in a VR6 is not a good prospect at the present cost of fuel...and the crazy sound they make means you want to pin the throttle all the time

Before the pug I had an Alfa GTV 2.0 Twinspark. It drank fuel, I reckoned it got about 20mpg. It also made a fantastic noise when spun up, sounded like a tuned touring car, and it begged to be thrashed constantly.
Weighed it in for slightly less than what I paid for it. Needed ARB links (replaced one and both wishbones, which were a nightmare. Even the bolts had to be shipped in from Italy), a cat (exhaust place that fitted the rear boxes I reckon had angle grinded through the pipe and filled it with gungum, the wipers didnt work (not even a COM2000 in sight!) and the clutch cylinder was gone (you had to "toe" the clutch otherwise it went to the floor).
Ended up with a Pug that is better on Fuel, roomier and more practical, hopefully more reliable (so far needed MAF and the most awkward to find 190162 Fuel Filter Housing, paintwork that is impossible to match despite having a paint code and the COM2000 unit that I need to take a few hours and replace).
