Someone please make me like my 406 again...

Post by Bailes1992 »

After spending around £2000 repairing bits and bobs. The fuel pumps now weeping diesel, my rear windscreen wipers stopped working and now my cooling fans won't go off
I've really had enough, writing the advert now for pistonheads to try get rid of the bloody thing before I put a hammer through the windscreen of it.
I took it for a nice thrash along some coast roads and realised what a good car it actually is, then got out to the sound of cooling fans which have been on since 10am after a run to Cardiff :( Just pulled the fuse on them... *sigh*

Anyone got any advice to whats up with the cooling fans? I have a D9 HDi here I can pinch a few parts from to try on mine to see what the problem is if thats any use?

Ta, Bailes.

Cooling fans staying on? Sounds like the coolant temperature sensor to me. I'll have a dig through autodata & see if I can track it down unless someone with servicebox access beats me.
Keep the faith Sam, by the time you've fixed these niggles you'll have a cracking car. Better the devil you know and all that!

I don't think it is, cause when I pull the plug on the sensor the fans go on full speed, when it's plugged in they stay on low speed.

I don't think I can fix all the niggles, the more I sort the more than turn up :(

i had a 405 1.9 td that did that , i was told its a fail safe system so if the switch goes or the wire breaks the fans come on so the engine wont cook itself , dont know if its true but when i replaced the fan switch on the thermostat housing the fans worked as normal then

Thing is this happened before, and after a drive with the fuse out it was fine again? So think it might be a sticky relay but I don't wanna change it if it's not the cause :(

id try the fan switch first if i was you cos they are cheap enough and as far as i know they are universal between all older pugs , it was just a different colour to determin the temp it would turn the fan on
