Well to be honest, what I am doing now actually! But after about a year it got quite dreary as it was mainly the same thing day in day out. I don't tend to get my hands dirty in the technical/interesting stuff that often as we are quite a small company.
I mean, every day I have to check that servers have done their back ups, make sure all retail reports have run properly and things like that. Our FD is a tight arse so our "new" UNIX server turns out to be a Celeron based machine with 512Mb of RAM. I mean... COME ON!!! I want RAID arrays, multi processors, 1Gbit networks.
Recently we had an office move and with that we had to do a transitional switchover of our main network to an existing subnet. So I took a P200 box, compiled slackware Linux on there, 3 network cards and hey presto. A nice router and a network bridge... and an Internet gateway. I loved doing that, but I don't get to do it that often.... erm... so yeah... :-P
Maybe I should become a taxi driver!!! I mean I already have the car

LOL....
I can't believe that is the spec of the server, why didnt you just take the cash and build one ? could have gone for quad processing power with 4gb ram and your raid array ! ! Who advises them on the network design and implementation for upgrades and the like etc.. ?
If its you then be more assertive and Tell them What you need if you have to go over the FD's head then so be it, its your experties against his number crunching ! ! Dont take any sh*t ! !

Yes I could have, but this was an exercise to save money as he didn't want to pay 800 quid for an extra WAN card for the Cisco router. Soooo.... 800 quid saved.. and now the whole company relies on an old P200 Linux box.... great, eh?
And trust me, you do NOT wanna get involved with our FD. He wants a Rolls Royce for Lada money... delivered yesterday.

i take it the p200s slacware install is one of those bitches that take around 9 hours cause its a custom compile? bet it flies tho (albiet with good ol IDE data transfer..).. Lol - throw in a 4 port PCI Gigabit network card, and see how the ol 200 takes the stress! lol
man, i want a job in IT!
