Well to be honest, what I am doing now actually! But after about a year it got quite dreary as it was mainly the same thing day in day out. I don't tend to get my hands dirty in the technical/interesting stuff that often as we are quite a small company.

I mean, every day I have to check that servers have done their back ups, make sure all retail reports have run properly and things like that. Our FD is a tight arse so our "new" UNIX server turns out to be a Celeron based machine with 512Mb of RAM. I mean... COME ON!!! I want RAID arrays, multi processors, 1Gbit networks.

Recently we had an office move and with that we had to do a transitional switchover of our main network to an existing subnet. So I took a P200 box, compiled slackware Linux on there, 3 network cards and hey presto. A nice router and a network bridge... and an Internet gateway. I loved doing that, but I don't get to do it that often.... erm... so yeah... :-P

Maybe I should become a taxi driver!!! I mean I already have the car :P

LOL....

I can't believe that is the spec of the server, why didnt you just take the cash and build one ? could have gone for quad processing power with 4gb ram and your raid array ! ! Who advises them on the network design and implementation for upgrades and the like etc.. ?

If its you then be more assertive and Tell them What you need if you have to go over the FD's head then so be it, its your experties against his number crunching ! ! Dont take any sh*t ! !

Yes I could have, but this was an exercise to save money as he didn't want to pay 800 quid for an extra WAN card for the Cisco router. Soooo.... 800 quid saved.. and now the whole company relies on an old P200 Linux box.... great, eh?

And trust me, you do NOT wanna get involved with our FD. He wants a Rolls Royce for Lada money... delivered yesterday. :frown:

lol.... sorry Welton, did we lose you.... ? it doesn't take much for us to start rabbiting on about computers when one person starts, its time to get a cup of coffee sit back read and learn or read and sleep... which ever you prefer...

If you have problems sleeping may I suggest a book that with help you:

Dietel and Dietel JAVA how to program 4th edition

Captain:

I would still go over his head, he sounds like a complete gimp, number crunching know nothing thinks he knows it all, guy on a power trip ! ! !

Think of reliability and speed, the bottlenecks and upgrading implications of SETTLING for such a unit and cheap components... GRRRRR FD's and their ass kissing I've just saved the company ?800, hows about you save the company 30K + a year by taking a pay cut or f00king off else where ! !

Ermmmm it has 2x 1Gbit network cards and 1x 100Mbit one..... seems to be OK actually. And CPU usage isn't strained at about 5% :)

Not sure how long it took to compile... left it over night :)
