Is there anybody here with any knowledge of any laws or guidelines regarding workplace parking? Our work has stopped us from parking on site & is now telling us to park in an empty site next door, but we now have a 5-10min walk to get in from where we have parked. Result of this is that a fair proportion of the workforce has taken to parking on the road outside the depot, but we are now getting told that everybody must use the car park because if people carry on parking on the road, the council will instigate legal proceedings against the company for being in breach of lease conditions (to do with causing nuisance to our neighbours).
I'm pretty sure that the complaint originates from a few numpties who park on the corner to the entrance of the company over the road & as long as that area & the area directly opposite the entrance is clear, then nothing can be said or done, but we're getting told that nobody is to park anywhere on the road. There are no yellow lines or parking restrictions in force on the road.
Does anybody know if there is some type of guideline or requirement anywhere for parking to be within easy access or within a certain distance of the workplace or is it just a case of putting up with what we're given?

Re: Workplace Parking
AFAIK parking is a "perk", especially with the greens trying to get us to get awkward buses into work.
No requirements or guidelines I know of, unless it is in your contract that you have guaranteed on site parking?

Re: Workplace Parking
Many planning permissions/tenancy's are granted with conditions surrounding the parking of vehicles, operating hours and so on. You may be near a residential area and if so this is always worse.
The parking of vehicles can be seen to 'obstruct' the free passage for visitors, goods and maintenance services over privately owned land and is often a grey area particularly if there are no yellow lines.
Sounds like some local busy body has complained to the council who have then reminded your company of its obligations.
If it gets too bad for you then I'd be tempted to 'tap up' a nice local and ask if you can park outside there house or whatever for a nominal monthly fee, say £15-20? there are schemes about near airports (park@mine or something?) so some people are up for sharing their drives etc.
Overall I don't think any employer will guarantee you a parking spot, let's face it, as long as you turn up on time and work your little socks of for f*ck all reward, they don't really care how you got there
