pros and cons between 2.0 and 2.2 HDI's
Peeps
Having lost my last 2.0 hdi to the scrap heap in the sky, thanks to some yobs i am looking at having yet another 406.
I have seen a couple of 2.2s in my price range and wondered what the pros and cons between the 2 are. My last 2.0 hdi engine was great no smoke not even with the weather we had at the beginning of the year. Any known issues with the 2.2s
I do alot of motorway miles and travel between 60 and 84 miles a day depending where i am based so need economy over power.
What i was also thinking was would the 2.2 rev lower therfore give me better economy on long runs.
I did look at the lagunas cus of the 6 speed box, but there are so many on ebay with turbo failure i have come back to the hdis. I think i have seen 1 advertised nationally with over 200k, do the same search for hdis and theres quite a few with 300k+

Re: pros and cons between 2.0 and 2.2 HDI's
I think you'll get as many different opinions as there are owners, but I went for the 2.2 because I wanted a bit more grunt. At the time everyone was avoiding them like the plague, due to the diesel particle filter and its reliability/ cost issues. Nowadays it's easy & cheap to remove, bringing an economy improvement too.
For sheer economy, the 110 is king, (more efficient than the non-intercooled 90 and higher geared too). The 2.2 has the same gearing as the 110. My driving consists of about 80% main road / motorway vs 20% urban. I got 41 / 42 mpg with the FAP system on and 45 ish without - this may not seem great, but mine's remapped to 180 bhp and I tend to use it a bit.
The 2.2 is smoother / quieter and the increased torque means less gear changing and a more relaxed drive. On the downside, it is more complicated and costs a little more to run.
I think it's worth it, but understand it's not for everyone.

I guess that, now the Devil's Particulate Filter can go in the bin, there's not much to choose - extra grunt, a little less economy perhaps, but it always depends on how heavy your right foot is anyway.

Re: pros and cons between 2.0 and 2.2 HDI's
My 2.0hdi is superb, the engine itself is 100% dependable even when other electrical bits give issues. the engine is something i trust. Its not as quick as a 2.2, its just not really a speedy machine, but on the motorway its got enought to keep them a-holes in their jeeps from tailgaiting you. im doing 80 miles a day for the past 5 weeks and its been doing 46 consitently with my uneconomical driving, could do more no doubt. Id love a remap an ecotune 140bhp but the insurance puts me off, the insurance also was the reason i got the 2.0 hdi instead of a 3.0 v6, and somewhere in an old diesel car magazine i read about the reliability issues of the 2.2 (which as owners have pointed out are acutally nothing much to worry about). The 2.0 seems to suit my car well however, its power delevery is smooth, its a refined engine and it suits the executive very well.

My lasy 2.0 hdi was a great engine and i am sure even with the miles on it would of continued for many years.
What mpg do people average from a 2.2 on long runs?

Re: pros and cons between 2.0 and 2.2 HDI's
from what i have seen there is no visible difference between the two. When you open the bonnet the 2.2 has a silver engine cover where the 2.0 has a black one
