Sunroof leak fixed

Post by FarmerPug »

Today as i was driving along it rained on me, down through the a pillars and out at them wee blobby bits that look like eyes that passengers ask 'whats these do, and they always touch them' so anyhow i dont like leaks in the slightest, i can put up with other faults but leaks no.
So i followed that article in the knowledge base about this and i checked the a pillar pipes, and the knurled ends, all were clear and yet the leaks still occured, mainly on the drivers side, so i took out the front sun visor, grab handle and courtesy light to get a better look under the headlining:
Image
this is what i seen (apologies for the blackberrys lack of quality pics):
Image
its blurry but the yellow dot at the top is light getting in, and this means a hole for water to get down onto the headlining and where it was getting into the car was through the wee holes in the rivets along the sunroof slider there at the front, so all i did was pumped a bit of silicone into them on each side 6 rivets in total 3 each side. Waited an hour for it to dry and hey presto problem solved and it cost nothing to solve.
I tested it by taking the hose for filling the orchard sprayer, which is quite fast, it can fill a 1000 litre tank in about 2.5 mins, this was held above the car and turned on and there was no leaks, and any damp spots that had been caused by the leaks were rigorously dried with a hairdryer to stop electrical gremlins.

Anyhow if your sunroof is leaking and youve checked the knurled ends of the pipes the rivets are the second place to look

Wow, nicely done! The centres of pop rivets do pull out sometimes but you'd think Pug had this one covered, obviously not though

(how does one properly do quotes)
(steve-earwig)youd think pug has that one coverd.

There is few things where peugeot covers it. but this issue has been caught early, its worthwile to check these rivets you dont want water going down into the electrics, or causing dampness

Either hit the "QUOTE" button on the post you want to quote and edit out what you don't want, or hit "REPLY" then select the text from the post you want to quote and hit the "QUOTE" button on that post.

What is the purpose of the sunroof, i enjoy its extra light and vision but in terms of opening it you only ever get wind noise or else rain in, the big long sunroof that were on the 309s were good because you could stand while driving provided you were in the right gear and didnt have to accelerate, brake, push the clutch or steer.

I like to have the sunroof open on a warm day because it gives a feeling like I'm not stuck in a tin box, when it's damn hot it's nice to leave open when parked so it doesn't turn into an oven inside. I miss one on my D9 :(

I only ever opened mine to unblock the soddin drains.
Only purpose it seems to serve is reducing headroom so really tall people can't have a 406. :cheesy:
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

no problem with me then ive plenty of headroom, but a sunroof offers infinite headroom for those who are taller.
During the summer i did leave it open to cool the car down, under a tree only issue was it shed its leaves into the car and there was the odd bit of moving biodiversity there also

The last car I had a sunroof on was the Honda Integra. It was a steel sunroof so let no light in usually :?

Remember the Ford ones with 'keep fit' manual winder handles?

1000th post

I recall the sunroof i had in my merc estate did the most ungerman thing in the whole world and it shocked and horrified me IT BROKE, but luckilly there is a manual adjuster in the boot so i could close it which hadnt broke, and i believe it was the switch that broke because i pressed a bit too hard.

Since this is a numerically significant post ill put up something useful, here for all of the ornithologists who frequently use their sunroofs for ornithology is a picture of the problem causing rivets, get a blob of silicone into them the more the merrier, and your leak if it isn't caused by a blocked pipe end should go away, remember to do it on the other side.
Image
Excuse the untidiness of the silicone application, i have since removed the excessive bits of silicone as it only needs to go to the inside of the rivets, the excess was caused when i lifted the silicone gun out.

The End of the 1000th post, hopefully one of my better ones.
