buying a 309

still looking a cheap runabout for my aunt, and i come across this:

these things are basically the same xud in the 306, in a stretched 205 body, how good would this car be as a cheap to run car for someone with no mechanical knoledge.

I would be a nice project car, but I'm not sure about relying on it. If it hasn't moved for 2 years, you'll have a lot of hoses gone brittle. The 309 was a good car in it's time, and the XUD engine is rock solid, I think the best Peugeot ever made. But this one is a gamble.

Looks like it's actually running in the last picture, which is one thing not to worry about. Was it stored inside or out? As Neil says, things deteriorate and I'd expect to need to replace all the shock absorbers and brake hoses, possibly all the rubber under the bonnet and maybe all the tyres too. And you just know that interior is going to smell like a dead dog

my mate had a 309 in white, with 1.9 diesel engine,,

it had 300,000 miles on the clock when he traded it in for a 306 estate

My red on i used for rallying round the fields came with a months tax and mot and it was a minter, all for just £100. it even had the original radio, the only issue was the boot had been changed because someone flung a brick through it. and it had big miles on it also. Im also looking at a few diesel 205s which have become rare all of a sudden, its not even that they are being snapped up and badly modified it seems that any 205 diesel that is put in the paper is nearly sold instantly.

i think that is quite a rare car as not many 309s had the turbo engine in

theres not many 309s anymore, the time i had mine parts were as rare as hens teeth, i was lucky to buy the second one for parts. Even the almighty ebay wasnt always awash with parts

You should've joined us over on the the 309 owners forum then. There's still stuff out there, you just need to know where to look. Like in my parts shed for example! Got almost half a 309 in there!

Ive no 309 now, my red one was really a minter, it was a mistake to use it for rallying round the field. The engine went as sweet as a nut.

Nice! Always liked the 309. Uncle had one years ago and always thought it was a comfortable little (or "mid sized" as it was then) car.

Low miles for a diesel. Only prob - Not MOTd in 2 years. Not like an NCD!

Handbrake might have seized?

Also, it appears to have kebab meat in the engine:

ah the joys of nitpicking adverts, doesnt the seats look quite worn down.
Says sold now though.
