TOP GEAR NOTICE

Post by FarmerPug »

Just so you dont regret missing it, top gears back on next tuesday the 21st at 8pm (BB1 not dave). Then another on boxing day, someone has thought out the tv schedule well this year, finally the sh*t factors over, people arent slipping on ice and good TV is back (i suppose that applies only if you dislike the xfactor/ strictly come dancing, and enjoy top gear):

It's in HD on the BBC HD channel. Are you really telling us you can't tell the difference? What size TV you got?

HD comes in three different flavours:

"HD 720p" which is 720 pixels high (you may see this referred to as "HD 720p")
"HD 1080i" which is really cheating because it uses interlacing to get the appearance of 1080 pixels. 1080i is rare nowadays, thankfully, because it's pretty crap - you get loads of flicker/tearing when things are moving fast.
"HD 1080p" which is 1080 pixels high, and is also known as "Full HD", and is the highest resolution you can get on a TV at the moment

What makes it confusing is when some bloody retailers show "HD Ready" on the full 1080p TV sets

The 720p format can be difficult to discern on some older LCD or plasma televisions as it's only 200 pixels finer than standard-definition PAL signal. My Mum's older Toshiba Regza television is a bit like this.

On a 37" or 42" TV with a good screen (high contrast ratio (up to 1,000,000:1), with a very high refresh rate (200 Hz or more)), you would have to be completely myopic not to be able to tell the difference between the same program in standard-def PAL and in all-singing-all-dancing 1080p.

My tv was a reject, it was one of the ones with an integrated dvd player, the dvd player didnt function, and the shop was throwing it out, and i got it. Opened it up, disconnected the dvd, actually removed the whole dvd thing in it, put it all back together and hey a free tv, but then no remote, so i got this thing which doubles as a writing pad:

Are they 1080i/p or 720p? And what signal source are you using. I've just got Sky HD and Freeview HD for the first time having bought a 55" 1080p Samsung LED telly and the difference between the HD and SD is truly amazing. My previous telly was a 37" Toshiba LCD with 720p but I didn't have any HD sources (other than an upscaling DVD player) so obviously didn't see any benefit.

I have an old must be 25 year old tube tv in my shed its so old it says 'COLOUR' on it, but the reason its going is its made by grundig, it just works every time.
There is a huge difference between LCD and LED screens, i have an LED screen on this macbook which also claims to be HD and i can actually notice the betterness of this screen over my old dell.
Anyone still got a VCR?

Removed the one from the living room a couple of weeks ago when I fitted the new telly, still got one in the bedroom (and several in the attic  ).

I used to repair them, but they arent even worth the effort of repairing these days, they just loose tracking any chance they get. The only vcr i have is the one built into my dvd recorder with a hard drive, which is a stupid idea because ive never really recorded a dvd everythings on the hard drvie, including the original BBC2 versions of the top gear botswana, vietnam, and bolivia challenges in their pure un davified cut to sh*t for advertisment purposes form.
