service @6k/fancy diesel/new this/that-is it needed?
I've just had a look through some of the threads on here and found it hard to believe SO many people mess about with their cars' when basically, they dont need to. Then, the next thread they write is along the lines of "Just replaced....& doesn't work anymore!"
It doesn't take a genius to come to the conclusion, that if those people never interfered with their car in the 1st place, nothing would've went wrong. I think I used to be guilty of this a little bit, when I got my 1st car,but not any more.Learned the hard way! So really, dont the majority of you now think "If it aint broke,DONT piss about with it?"
I see some of you changing filters etc every few thousand miles.C'mon!!Really.Is it neccessary?Everyone like their car to run well, but some people seem to tempt fate.My mate has had peugeots for years,& he never touched his cars',and they ran pefect. And he was a taxi driver-Look at the miles he put thru his engines.
I'd like to know what some of you think

I may not be an expert but i get a certain level of satisfaction from a bit of tinkering round with my car. Although with the engine and mechanical stuff i stay clear of tinkering, its left for the mechanic.

If people on here didn't take an interest and screw their cars apart when its largely unnecessary then there would be no threads of advice or knowledge base for other folk who genuinely need help, infact there would be no forum. At the end of the day we all paid for our motors, its within everyones right to change stuff, fit performance parts, sound systems etc. and seek help if they get it wrong. It'd be a mondane world if every car was the same, these are my thoughts

yup we all do small and big things to our own cars to get them just right for our own tastes, im sure im the only one on here who has combined chrome door handles and a cream interior, thats because i think the chrome handles look better, some people disagree but i think its better thats why i did it. Someone may do the same thing some time.

i find that hard to belive as if he hadnt serviced them or had them serviced the oil would have gone thick with metal particals and knackerd the engine, im a mechanic for a taxi firm and by keeping the cars serviced well they have lasted longer than anyone would expect, one of the lauguna's i service has done 652k since new and thats x reg.martint wrote:My mate has had peugeots for years,& he never touched his cars',and they ran pefect. And he was a taxi driver-Look at the miles he put thru his engines.

yup the xud was an engine that needed looking after, especially the coolant or it could overheat. But 600k on an engine youd need to be a fairly big driver and not get bored with the car, unless its been through multiple owners. I think its fairly safe for me to say no rover k series, or nsu r080 has ever even passed 100k never mind 600k miles.

wow, i never wanted to buy an ex taxi because i thought the shite was drove out of them but that sounds like a well looked after high miler, i suppose high milers need to be looked after in the first place to get to that stage. But the best car to pick as a taxi is always something french as a passenger your always guarenteed of a comy trip.

Re: service @6k/fancy diesel/new this/that-is it needed?
why in dublin is so many taxis sh*t, they are all crap spec jap imports of toyota corollas with hideous interiors that stink of cheap air freshners, and have terrible seat covers. But one day me and a friend went to top gear live, and actually turned it into a competition to see what was the best taxi we could flag down, he got a vw passat which was acceptable light years better than corollas, but then i won the game by flagging down a mercedes E class v6.

Re: service @6k/fancy diesel/new this/that-is it needed?
its a fact a diesel engine needs regular services
fell free to not service yours and see what happens,
after i service my car every 6 months, even if ive only done 4k miles it feels much much better and sounds it too and thats a fact
and at the price of new clean filters it isnt worth not doing it
it only costs me £30 for oil , oil filter , air filter and fuel filter
at that price i will carry on doing it every 6 months as well, not only is it keeping the oil fresh in the engine it gives me a couple of hours out the house tinkering with the car
