Who's got the best/worst journey to/from work?

Post by Welly »

All this talk about what we do has led me to ask this, so, I'll start with mine.....
  • 08:30* start car, leave it running for about 10 mins (warm up)
    Leave local residential streets
Turn into country B road for 3 miles (can reach 80+ down here, *wake up*)
Slow down, park outside office door and dive in (cuppa Tea).
7 minutes, No traffic lights, no roundabouts, no traffic actually, just me, fields and sheep, and a 406.

(reverse procedure for journey home)

So, how about you???????

*Time may alter regularly to 06:00 AM when work load dictates

Roughly:
6:30am Get in car
6:35am Hit the A500, 70mph
6:45am Hit the M6. Drive behind a truck at (indicated) 60mph
7:25am Join the queue for the M62
7:50am Join the queue for the end of the M602, queue on the A6 in Salford
8:10am Park up
8:20am Arrive in the office

Can take several hours longer if the traffic's bad.

Nighttime/weekends the trip can be done in 30 minutes!

My times vary according to the shift I'm on.

Early shift, I have to be in the building for 06:30
Day Shift, in the building for 07:45
Back shift, in the buolding for 14:30
Night shift, in the building for 22:30
Weekend Day, in the buidling for 06:30 (12 hour shift)
Weekend Night, in the building for 18:30 (12 hour shift)

Basically For Day and Back I need to allow 45 mins minimum travel time.
Its a 20 mile stretch to work and I have to travel past a chocking point. A Bridge. Built and opened in the early 60s, its woefully unadequate for todays traffic volumes. It can take up to an hour to progress the 3 miles from the start of its approach roads on the North end to getting clear of the huge clusterfuck of an intersection on its southside.

My journign from the north takes me along the M90 motorway which is usualy clear up until about a mile before the bridge in the mornings. During the day between rush hours its generally ok. But the bridge controllers love to f*ck around and close a lane. That causes mayhem.
Once across the bridge, I travel westward on a country road. OK if no one is in front, you can cruise nicely. But everytrime you get someone in front, they insist on doing 50mph the entire 10 miles. And its twisty, so not many overtaking spots.

Going home, I have to contend with the toll booths on the south side of the bridge. Flaming nightmare. They always manage to have half of them close come rush hour and its not uncomming to queue for an hour. Friday afternoons are the absolute worst for that.
And because they're replacing the booths with new ones.... the whole affair is a clusterfuck just now. Never are all the booths open.

Typical times for getting in me car are:

Early shift: 05:50
Day Shift: 06:40
Backshift: 13:30 or 14:00 if I feel daring.
Night shift: 22:00
Weekend Day: 06:00
Weekend Night: 18:00

im on shifts, but earlies, its usually leave at 05:45 - turn right, srtaight, (if its timed right, i can make 8 sets of traffic lights in a row) - then at the very end of the long street, i turn right into the train station, arriving at arounf 05:53 - 05:55

late shift, same journey, leaveing at 14:15 and arriving at 14:25

but coming back the way, i snake through town, then I haev a blast on the m-way, then home again :D

Thanks,
Nick

I recently killed a rabbit methinks. I was on the way home from work. Doing a steady 60mph in the pitch black on a country road. I turned a corner and found dozens of the buggers on the road. They all scattered, but one decided to dash from the verge on the right, to the left side. Well, I managed to line my car up so I passed it without my wheels touching it... but I think my slow slung center section of my exhaust got it as I heard and felt a slight bump.

22 mile drive to work, anything from 45 minutes

Finish work at 15.00
Get home any from 16.30 to 17.30, dam I hate the Blackwall Tunnel.
