Have ditched windows 7

Post by adamr8965 »

As the title reads i have ditched windows 7 in favour for unbuntu 10.10.

Windows 7 spent 20 mins trashing the hard drive everytime i started the computer. Even when windows had finished loading the desktop it was using 75% cpu usage doing nothing.

Unbuntu took 20mins to install on a different part of the hdd, takes 30 seconds to boot up and 10 seconds to shutdown. Copied all my settings from windows across, so bye bye windows 7 (all the fail safes) and hello real word computing.

What spec pc do you have?

I've run win7 for a while now, cores spend most of the day idle, hard drive only spins up when i stream a film, play a game or the search function kicks in.

Could never drop to a non MS product.

ive just put windows 7 on and its great

my pc turns on and off super quick , it all depends what hard drive you have as well ? old IDE or sata1 are slower than sata 2 and 3

i only have oldish AMD Athlon x64 dual core CPU (2.4ghz), and 1GB DDR2 memory at the moment and a sata 3 hard drive

and it runs fantastic , shud be even better when i upgrade to 4 gig ram and a new video card 8)

to run windows 7 you need a decent spec pc so i was told

Windows 7 is the mutts nuts, but on the other side of the coin its the same as Vista in such that if you have a older generation PC it will run like dog crap.....

Win7 is better than Vista at running on old hardware.

That said, my PC is an older Core2 Quad Q6600 with 4 GB of DDR2 and an nVidia GTX260 PCI Express graphics card, and it runs really well under Vista. I'm told it will work even better under Win7.

Windows does use hardware inefficiently, though, in comparison to most UNIX/Linux derivatives. The downside is that UNIX/Linux is more difficult to use than Windows (at the moment), but distributions like Ubuntu are narrowing this gap in leaps and bounds. The lack of compatibility with Windows software is also a disadvantage, but WINE is getting better all the time too.

So a non windows program having an update is a windows problem? And windows itself fixing any faults is a problem?

So why when i check my cpu usage in windows it's currently using anywere between 50-75% all the time with no programes running at all.

I defraged the hard drive after moving eveything (video's photo documents) to my external hdd. Removed every programe that was not needed anymore and still have the same problem.

Maybe norton 360?

Dear god, your running Norton and you think Windows is the problem? :|

Did you look in resource manager (the one after task manger) to see what was running?

W7 is unusable with less then 1GB RAM.

Ubuntu will happily tolerate 512MB.

(I have to have it set to "Windows Classic" theme (like W95) because I can't see the see-through windows  and there are too many inconsistencies in the UI. Inconsistencies drive me  )

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.

You know you can just turn off the "aero" window effect, yeah? Gives you solid boarders then.
