The 406 - The Old Mans Choice

Post by CountryPug »

Guys, I've been receiving much abuse lately over my choice of vechicle. Its been brought to my attention on numerous occasions that the Pug 406 is a car for old men :frown: Its a fair enough observation I suppose, generally you don't see many people the lower side of 40 driving a 406. The question this raised in my head was - What exactly constitutes 'An Old Mans Car'? I don't see the 406 as an 'Old Mans Car', rather the 'Sensible Mans Car'. Taking the fake wood trim out of the equation I don't see anything about the 406 that makes it more 'Old Man' than any other saloon. Infact, park it beside a host of other saloons the same age and the 406 is a lot more stylish and up to date than the rest. As a man of 24 years of age I am proud to fly the 406 flag and take pleasure in introducing this car to a younger generation. I anticipate a time (especially in NI where we love Diesel Pugs) when the 406 will be embraced by this younger generation due to its generous equipment levels, great ride and handling and remappable diesel engines.

What do you think? Does the 406 deserve its 'Old Man' tag or is it a case of mistaken identity?

Couldn't agree more, the fact that other people don't like it only makes me want to keep it alot longer and show them what a super motor it is :)

The people who dont like it, have prob never driven 1, I had the same sort of abuse when I got my first 406 3-4 yrs ago.
It was the most comfortable car I'd ever driven, and still is. Got sick of people thinking I was a Taxi tho.

I'm 29 and drive a 406, and got called a boring old fart and that was from most the lads at my haulage company.

But then i started using waste oil, and told them it cost's roughly 3pints at the local (chip shop owner payment) to fill up the pug.

The smile was then on my face :cheesy:

Im the proud owner of a Xud 1.9. And it will never go because of what it costs to run.

I'm 30 and I've had two 406s already.

Nobody (other than my brother) has referred to either of 'em as an old man's car.

Im 19 and i say certainly not, it has a bit of wood, that looks nice, the exterior of the car looks very stylish. But heres the thing the 406 doesnt have old man handling, its one of the best saloons out there, the equipment levels on a 406 are fantastic the 'young' and clueless drivers of them 306s dont get the same equipment and the most a diesel 306 ever got was 90 bhp, a 406 has 110 and is faster. An old mans car is a rover 216i, or its modern day equal a hyundai getz or i20

Im 19 and a student, i've only ever come across "old man car" accusations from my girl friend who hates my car.

All the other accusations are its a taxi ha.

To be honest its exactly what i need, as i do a lot of trips over the country.
Its good on fuel (better than all of my friends cars bar one friends suzuki wagon r+)
Unlike small petrol powered cars, i dont have trouble going up a steep hill while my cars full of people (no need to change down aswell and hope i get up it)
Lots of space unlike most hatchbacks (important as i'm 6, 4)
Parts are cheap ( £12 for a second hand wing in my cars colour)
Cheap insurance for young driver aswell.

I can see why a lot of my points would make it an "old man car" but i see many of my friends struggling with expensive parts and pathetic miles to a gallon and ridiculous insurance premiums.

Lecture over ha
