The inlet manifold is tucked away at the back of the engine behind the rocker cover, it's a kinda square-section header and has a connection port from the EGR valve too.

Because of the helpful [sic] way the engine leans backwards then getting to the IM would be challenging, you'd need all new gaskets, I'd actually change the EGR for a new one, the solid recirc tube from the EGR is very difficult to seal properly and only a pressure-smoke test will tell if you've done it properly - the tube has sort of swaged/ball end fittings with a U-clamp but they're crap.

I wouldn't bother trying to de-coke like this if the car's running well anyway......not unless you're fanatical and have a lot of time on your hands, and would like to take lots of pictures of the process for the benefit of the club....oh hang on...

The MAF is the bit just behind the Air Filter box with the 65mm?? air hose connection, you can unplug it and *very* carefully clean the sensor tips with carb cleaner or similar (I used to use a cotton bud dipped in petrol  ).

At worse you'd get a little bit of blackish residue off the thing and perhaps the impression that the car feels more responsive after.

Psychological tuning - you can persuade yourself lots of things work better, if you're minded to.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Yeah, I've read somewhere of a guy who believes his HDi puts out a stonking 180 bhp with nothing more than a hammer, some leads, a lap top and a file sent via e-mail :P
