Veg oil

Post by rwb »

With all the recent talk about running on veg oil (XUD but not HDi) I was relieved to find that it is legal to use up to 2,500 litres per year without paying fuel duty.

I use about 1,200 litres of diesel per year. So that would give a saving of 1,200 * (1.3 - 0.8 ) = £600.
That's enough to buy an XUD 406
But hang on, I'd only be getting 45 MPG out of an XUD (from experience), so that takes it down to £300.
Does MPG go down for veg oil? Only £140 at 40 MPG.

What happens if I increase my MPG on normal diesel?
That Toyota thing saves me £280.
A somewhat silly BMW saves £400 (extra-urban).

So what is the pick of 15 year old cars? Against a 318 or 325 a 406 looks very attractive.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

406 is usually cheaper to buy & run. The heated fuel filter helps with veg oil in colder weather too.

How do you drop from £600 to £300 with 45mpg, are you currently getting 90mpg?
MPG can go down slightly, but not by much.

The BMW link is for a 320D, that will not run on Veg Oil, Bio would be ok tho.
A 325 TDS I have owned, and it does about 25mpg around town, and 42mpg on motorways.
Altho it has a Bosch Injection Pump, its 1 of the poorest, mine developed a leak and needed the seals replaced at a cost of £200 only weeks after using Veg.
8mths after having the seals done, the Injection Pump packed up completely, was gonna cost too much to fix, so car was scrapped.

XUD 1.9 TD is perfect on Veg. Check ebay, you can get cheap used Veg on there for prob under 30p litre, if not buy an IBC 1000 ltrs for £500 ish.

The only reason an XUD uses more fuel than a HDi is because the HDi has longer gear ratio's.
I got a funny feeling the 406 HDi box uses a Hydraulic Clutch? If so maybe use a 306 HDi gearbox, but then not sure how the driveshafts would be etc.

I had my XUD running 22psi on veg oil, fuel turned up, fuel pump advanced slightly and I was getting 0-60 in about 10 seconds and had it resting on it's rev limiter at 115-120mph. It was pretty quick and not once did the temp get any higher nor did it ever feel like I was harming it. I love the XUD! And even if you do blow it up, £150 gets you a new engine and a day to fit it?

I don't agree - direct injection is more efficient, high pressure injection gives finer atomisation & better combustion, fuel metering is much more accurate. Lower tickover speed, overrun fuel cut off help too.

Also I think an HDi 90 has the same gearing as a 1.9TD, my HDi 90 Xsara certainly had and was about 10 mpg better than the 306 XUD my bro had at the time....

The hdi has all its sensors and electronics controlling the injection all for the sake of lower emissions and better fuel economy.
If you want a car that will take biodiesel while remaining completley reliable, then a mercedes 300d is what you need:

you could probably run them things on battery acid and they wouldnt notice it.

Veg Oil lowers the emissions, its carbon neutral, the MOT tester often thinks his equipment is knackered during the test.

HDi is a complex engine, fine when its running great, but a bitch and often very expensive to fix when it goes wrong.
XUD is simple, even a mong could fix it.

but the hdi is modern, all modern engines are a bitch to fix when they go wrong, but peugeot couldnt have kept on using the xud as it wouldnt have competed at all well with the stuff coming from vw, and bmw.

HDi (90) is longer legged than XUD 90, and HDi (110) is longer again.
The power and torque curves are different between the three engines.

My 406 would do 21mph in first, the HDi went to 27mph.
