D9 engine tray sagging?

Post by no2lurch »

went over some real rough ground today and caught the under engine tray on the loose ground.

should the tray be 'saggy' like this:

questions i have are:

-can i live without the trays?
-the front tray fits on top of the back tray so the back tray sort of forms a 'mouth' which i worry will open up (sagging down more) when i drive, so can i use some cable ties to close and secure this 'mouth'?

my personal feelings on under trays are that if they didnt need them then pug would have never fitted them.

they do a few jobs, they are an aerodynamic thing for smother air flow under the car, they stop stones and the like from getting at the belts and causing any other damage , also even though they are only plastic the help protect the sump.

id leave it where it is if i were you, and yes you can use cable ties to secure it up a bit better, mabie a good idea to see if any of the screws are missing

what about the 406s that arnt fitted ?
never known a stone to flick up and cause damage to a belt

my car doesnt have 1 and never has, but if it did i would probably leave it there and fix it up if it was broke ,,,

but its sumthing i wont be adding to mine 8)

On my suzuki jeep i had a tray, it rattled like mad, i ripped it out, and it got plenty of abuse off road, more abuse than a car will get in its life, and it kept going, so my opinion is they are unnecessary, ive none either on my 406, so dont worry yourself too much.

That's the one. Neither of my 406s left the factory with one, I never had any problems with the 2.1 D8 but this HDi seems more vulnerable to water being thrown up into the belts - occasionally, when I can't avoid it, I go through a puddle and then get the belt squealing, wipers on a go slow, heavy steering... bluddy car

the trays are both deffo secured to the car fine as they should, its just this gap. i think i will try to stitch them together wth cable ties.

Good idea to keep them on, mine sag in the middle too. Without them there isn't any protection against water splashing up around the belts like others have said, they'll help keep your engine bay cleaner especially at this time of year when there is salt on the roads and they keep the noise down quite considerably.

That looks like the subframe is bent! VERY bad!

If it's just the plastic undertray, do yourself a favour and replace all the bolts with cable ties... :)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

well i tackled this job yesterday. all the nuts came off ok, and i replaced some of the existing cable ties on putting it all back together.

i layed the 2 trays out on the floor and secured them both together with cable ties. i offered them back up to the car but they still were sagging a touch so i reinforced the join with some old thin ally brackets doubled up. its not sitting much better.

the trays are not the lowest point of the undercar now which i am happy about.
