What is the button for (near the immob. keypad) that looks like a volume thing?

and, upon changing the reverse lights today, I noticed in the boot is a kind of key lock - any ideas what it is? My Pug key doesn't fit it...

If there are two contols one is headlight height adjustment, and the other is dashboard illumination as for the key thingy aint got a clue.

'97 R 2l Exec Turbo - The button is to the right of the headlamp adjustment and dial lumination rollers - and has a red light - I'm assuming it's summat to do with the immobiliser but I've no idea what it does exactly

Well, if that lock thijng is for the alarm, I've no key for it, and one never came with the car

The key turns the alarm siren off and on, the button with the flashing light turns the internal alarm sensors on and off.
I didn't get a key for the alarm on mine either
