You're going to think i'm mad but your help appreciated plea

Post by plod »

I know some of you have told me not to get rid of my car, and not to buy the damaged 2003 SE estate I mentioned in the "Opinions please" thread
but i'm off to look at it when they open in the morning

My mechanic friend who repairs crash damaged cars is coming with me

He spoke to the seller this afternoon
He asked why it's a non runner
The reply was it turns over really slowly

Now, I'm hoping it's simply a bit of a flat battery, and the "inertia" switch has tripped out

Now i've been up since 3 and struggling a bit, and appreciate a use of the search button could given time reap all the answers I need
However, as i'm struggling I'd appreciate your help guys

If it's not the above, what else could cause the starting problem
Yes, I know my mate is a mechanic, and should know his stuff, but i'm looking for things that may be perticular to the 406

Would a battery with not enough charge, cause issues with the BSI and not let it start?

Personally, I would of thought if the inertia switch had tripped out, the seller would realise this surely, but my mate said he wouldn't put it past them not to realise

So, please please please guys, and advice appreciated on what issues could cause starting problems ( any advice except don't buy the car  )

Assuming it's a HDi, our recent recruit pat, (who seems to know a thing or two), reckons it wont fire the injectors unless it's turning over at a respectable rate.....

That 2.2's still up for grabs for an hour or two. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2003-PEUGEOT-406- ... 3a646c8c0a

By all means go see it, just remember to use your head - there's loads more about :arrowu:

Umm, duff starter motor? Would you be able to stuff a known battery on it for a try? Failing that (and it probably will be failing that) take a meter with you and check out the existing battery. They might always have killed it trying to start the thing and not got anywhere for other reasons.

Which one was this? All the ebay auctions in your Onions Please thread seem to have ended

Onions thread

Here's the relisted car
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT

Well, I guess I'd be swayed by the fact it's an SE estate, but my mate has been very good to me, and always looks after me where cars are concerned, so i'm pretty confident he won't let me buy it if he doesn't think it's right

I'm leaning towards letting him do all the talking :cheesy:

His jump pack is on charge ready for tomorrow, so should have plenty of beans on tap

Oh blimey, it's the one that's been driven over a traffic island  Take a couple of powerful torches with you, and a digital camera so you can post pics of how bad it is.

I can't help feeling the guy's going to suddenly want more for it if you can get it going (if the turning over slowly thing doesn't actually turn out to be because the sump's missing and the crankshaft's bent)

When my mate rang up earlier he asked if there was any damage to the sump, and they said no

He also suggested we negotiate price first, and tell them that we'd only buy at that price if we can get it started

As it stands, the plan is to try and get it for less than £800 on the basis of:
A/ We can get it started
and
B/ It requires:
Front bumper ( complete ) + paint
Rear bumper + paint
OSR light
damage to near rear light needing fixing
NSF bottom arm

**edit**
oops
parts above plus a tyre, and the tailgate trim

sounds like a good idea that,
front end might of been damaged by it been dragged off the road by the police or something so it might not of been front ended,
ask them if its been cat cd or will it have been enterd on the v car list

It is a Cat C, so will need a VIC check
My mate said he'd help me fix it, and get it mot'd, then run it over the VOSA at Brimingham on his trade plates for the VIC check

dave . if you remove the battery to try one that you know works.

check the main earth point on the car when the battery is off.

its worth a look. make sure it looks ok.

IMO its a bit exxy for a Cat C car.

Think about it - by the time you get all the parts, paint and labour - you are going to be pushing 2k on the amount of work due? How much are 53 plate cars of a similar mileage and spec going for these days?

I was "hoping" to put it right for about £500, so if I can get it for £800, then it will owe me £1300, add the mot and vic check and another £100 for sundries, so for arguments sake, lets say £1500
I would say, it has to worth around £2,300 - £2,500

Tyre - £60
Arm - £30
Bumpers - £150
Light - £10
Labour + paint - £250 ( mate's rates, hopefully )

dave if your gonna paint the bumpers. you can buy any colour. and i rekan you could half your original price of £150 for 2 bumpers.

you will probably pick a front bumper up for £30-£40 8)
