Parking an autobox

Still getting used to the autobox. Any of you autobots have an opinion on this? :

On Parking, should I leave it in Park only, or Park plus pull the handbrake full, or handbrake slightly?

OR should I put it in Park mostly, but use the handbrake every week or so?

Feckin handbrake doesn't hold at all. Makes the 406 handbrake look like a clamp

In an auto the Park is the equivilant of parking in a gear, the gearbox is holding it in place. Although probably something there to lock the gearbox.
Its recommended you use the handbrake as well to reduce the strain on the gearbox.

And then have the handbrake repaired, because it sounds like it's fecked. New shoes needed, possibly - made a fair difference to the Coupe when I had that done.

I would say that the official answer is to use gearbox in park & handbrake full, but I always just used to leave them in park. Although a friend did once tell me that in park it is held by a pin & if you keep putting too much pressure on it (constant hill parking) you can knacker it.

I have to say in all the dodgey auto boxes i've had to deliver, the one thing that always worked was the park function. Just only put it in park when totaly stopped. Hand brake as well can only be good, belt and braces.

i rember the old merc the handbrake was shite, it was one of them american style jobbies. if you have been in an old merc you will know how it works.
It did work but it was a pain to use but park did hold it, if it was engaged you would hear a nice click and everything would be locked up.

ive never left my autos parkerd in park always neutral and handbrake on,
Autos need a keen handbrake as they can creep if you are at lights with it still in drive like many do,
thats a bad idea too as it can strain the box.

Japs have a good Auto box tho not like the ones ive had Fords Auto boxes are like choclate
My seira cosworth replica, died of auto box failiure by just running out of petrol icouid never work that one out

There have been a few clips on them police action video shows where some yanks have got out of their cars and left them in D, they then drove on without anyone in them.

I sometimes sit on the footbrake in D at the lights.

If I know it's going to be a long light cycle I do try and engage Park.

There is also a bit of a knack at around 30 and 50 mphs of geting it to change up a gear such that you are cruising at a nice low RPM and not using up too much fuel.

Slow changes can mean you need to change the transmission fluid

Remember I ended up changing the gearbox oil in the 406 when I hadn't intended to.

Got me sump plugs mixed up.

Never used the handbreak at all, never saw the point? The box locks off the gears so they can't move?
Used to get a bollocking off her for not using the handbreak

Autos have a transmission cooler I know the oil needs changed otherwise shifts get a bit jumpy

I usually get a b*ll*cking off the other half for pulling the handbrake too tight and she can't release it

It's on the to do list of a good full service and k+n filter. Only thing with having a rare awkward car (as per the GTV) is that there is no Haynes manual

The type accord forum don't seem to care about anything that isn't a Type R saloon, in fact so far the 406 forum has been more helpful in Honda matters
