Aircon......How much does it effect MPG?

Post by Mastiff »

Just wondering how much my aircon would decrease my MPG? Reason I am asking is I have been told they use a lot of fuel? I have a 2001 110 HDI.

It feels like a lot more. Its OK on the motorway, but I find the extra load intolerable round town at low revs.
Speaking of which, I need a re-gas

Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

As I said in the other thread, I did experiment once years ago but found no discernable difference, so now I just leave the air con on auto and enjoy it! 8)

Yes, was very welcome today

Although I had a weird one

I had mine regassed at the jokers last summer
Didn't pay as under their policy, if they can't get it colder, you don't pay
When I first had the car you could see your breath
Never did that last year and just thought the muppets have fecked up as usual
Today I took the family to Kenilworth Castle for a few hours
On the way, I for the first time in 2 years could see my breath and air felt icy cold on me
On the way back, couldn't see my breath and not so cold :(

thats weird . did you allow enough time for the dash board to cool down.

the air con has to cool all the dash board down 1st if the car has been stood in a hot climate 8)

i havnt had my air-con regassed in 2 and a half years of owning the car but its still cool

smells a bit like a fridge but takes a while to cool inside of car down. (hence - needing a re-gas)

in my uncles volvo V70 yesterday. we did a 30 mile drive home from work . the car was stood all day in the sun.

even when we got home it was still not as cold as it should be. the dashboard was really warm. being black as well doesnt help

this effects the air con if you ask me. it has to cool it all down before even getting to the cabin 8)

I have owned three Pugs in the past which all boasted Air-Con, including my 406, and none of them ever worked due to leaks. At least the 106 has a window on the roof which opens, so I see this as an upgrade :cheesy:

my aircon never makes any difference to the engine sound, or performance, economy isnt affected.
even if its using a bit of fuel it keeps me cool, so it would be worth 10mpg and 20bhp.

My air con made loads of noises,
strangely it still cut in with no air con fluid this is what snapped the bottom pulley off,
ithink if the requarly serviced the air con wouid be good on the 406 ive got by withought it ive not had one car yet other than my Merc c class where the air con Actualy worked :(

Leather is good for kids as you can wipe stuff off it easily, but on a hot day like today it bloody burns you  and on cold days its like sitting on ice!
But the air con is excellent, even when its not actually switched on you can hear the pump coming on and off randomly, i guess thats the climate control doing its thing, but i dont think its a bad thing as it keeps the system in working order.
