First impressions of the C5

Post by DiscoPol »

Ok guys firstly an apology for the lack of pictures with this thread, I have been too busy driving it to give it a suitable wash and polish for pics

I will start with the drive first and move on to the toys later, well what can i say, the engine is all you ever wanted a Hdi to be, its smooth, relatively quiet, fairly frugal, powerful and it delivers the power beautifully thanks to the twin turbos. The peak torque is somewhere down round the 1400-1600 rpm area and it keeps giving up until 4,200 ish after that it runs a bit flat but with the 6 speed box there is always another gear to change to.

Acceleration from a standing start is a quite difficult to master at first as you need to get out of first as soon as possible and get it in to second where the fun really begins and it just keeps going and going, I have run out off bottle well before the engine has run out of puff. Once moving its smooth and very forgiving with such low down grunt it can and will pull from almost idle in any gear once moving, round town 4th is the gear of choice as it will pull from about 20kmh all the way up to about 130kmh thats one hell of a tall gear, granted at 100kmh+ its starting to growl a bit, but again thats part of the fun, the sound from inside the car when accelerating is lovely for a diesel it makes you smile as you put your foot down its very similar to the grumble you get with a big "V" petrol lump.

As for economy, well you have to remember at the moment i am still getting used to the gearbox and my newly rediscovered ability to overtake at will so its getting some stick on the loud pedal, even so round town its giving 8.4 L/100km(33.5mpg) and out on a run this weekend over 650km it gave me a combined cycle of 7.1 L/100km(40mpg) with a mix of twisty but flat roads and a few bits of dual carriage way with plenty of overtaking action, i have no doubt when the novelty wears off it will get better, aircon is on full time time too as its in the early 20s here now on a daily basis with the odd day up at 30ish.

On to the the interior, stonkingly good, black half leather electric seats with full adjustments, including the upper part of the back rests being adjustable, 11 axis to play with from what i remember, of course memory and heated along with a massage function on the drivers seat which gives a nice lower back massage when activated. The steering wheel is fixed centre so your buttons are always where you left them, its a good job as there are 18 buttons and two thumb wheels on there that control everything from the bluetooth phone to the cruise and stereo controls, the two thumb wheels do the on board computer and cycle either radio stations or phonebook, navigation etc.

It has a single slot cd player, dual tuner radio, navigation, bluetooth head unit and 7 or 8 inch screen for the navigation and parking sensors display, when not being used for either it will display radio, cd info or phonebook, it can all be switched of at the touch of a button if you dont want the distraction.

The park assist function is a handy tool for those with no spatial awareness, as you pass a parking spot if you turn it on it will measure the spot and give you advice on the difficulty of parking there, it needs you to tell it which side you want to park by using the appropriate indicator, it also handily tells you by displaying the info in the middle of the speedo so no need to be glancing at the big screen in the centre of the car, talking about the speedo it has the needle coming in from the outside not going out from the centre, no real use other than to free up the middle of the dial for yet more info displays.

The tailgate is all electric, the rear windows are tinted and also have interior factory fit blinds, the rear seat is 65/35 split if you needed the extra boot space, but its doubtful as its fairly big back there anyway, if carrying long items the rear seat also has a nice armrest with cubby holes that doubles as a ski carrier when the interior panel is dropped, in the boot you also get a permanent 12v outlet handy for anything that you want leave plugged in whilst away from the car and a rechargeable torch that doubles as a loading light when in its recharge socket, in the boot there is also a switch to move the rear up and down via the hydrothingymabob suspension to make loading easier if you want.

The suspension although useful for loading and getting over those rough fields is fairly boring but comfy until you hit the sport button and then it changes the whole feel of the car and you really can use those twin turbos in the twisty stuff. For such a large car it handles really well and the ESP rarely cuts in to keep things straight.

Thats all i have time for today as im just about to go into my next lesson but if i had to sum it all up in a few words i would say "Fecking awesome" i am a happy bunny with it so far and i promise i will get some pics up soon, it is a damn fine looking car in my opinion.

That's a fine looking machine, the quality of the interior plastics looks very good there.

If I may be so bold as to butt-in the Twin Turbo set up on a 4-cylinder works in parallel - a small turbo spools up quickly for low rpm boost and a larger one does the higher revs both with common inlet and discharge manifolds.

Looks awesome Disco! Too much like a 407 for my liking though :( There's something about a large French car that just does it for me.. Can I sleep in the boot?
