Rear Drums?

Post by Bailes1992 »

I've only ever done one set of drums and that was on the other halfs brothers car with her Dad watching over me
I need to do mine ASAP as I found out after I snapped a spring the other day.
My uncle pulled one drum off becuase there was a rattling and there was next to nowt left on the shoes and a lip on the drums.

Now he had a bit of a problem getting the drum off as there was a lip on it.

Whats the easiest way to get the drum off when theres a lip? My Uncle just bashed the hell into drum and then leavered it off (he's a diesel fitter).

So whats the proper way to get the drum off when theres a lip?

Am I ok to remove the drill with a grinding stone on a drill? Or am I better off getting someone with a lathe to do it?
Is it worth regreasing the bearing before I put it all back together?

You need to back the adjusters off as far as possible. If they're automatic you need to find out how to release them (screwdriver through the backplate on some). Failing that it's beat the hell out of them and levers I'm afraid.

I have been told you can release the adjesters from a hole in the back but apparently it's a pain in the arse.
If I have new pins, clips and springs for the drums. So if I can't get the adjusters to releast could I grind the pin off from behind to release the shoes?

On the Focus the best way of removing the drums is to leave the wheel fastened to the drum (slacken the nuts off first), then remove the big nut from the wheel bearing and wiggle the drum off using the leverage from having the wheel still on.

That's my preferred method too, use the wheel to pull the drum off. Smacking the drum with a lump hammer is just asking for trouble IMHO :?

As far as removing the lip on the drum, use an angle grinder, I do.

Didn't end up doing them today, just run out of time.
I didn't think of putting the wheel on to get the drum off :D

Plan is to get the drum off
Remove the old organs,
Give the inside a good scrub and remove any dust.
Replace the shoes, springs, clips etc etc.

Mask off the bearing, sand any rust off the outside of the drum with course paper and finish it off with fine.
Grind off the lip and finish it off with some sand paper.
Give the outside of the drum a lick in hammerite (Black).
Repack the bearing with grease, pop the drum back on the car, grease up the wheel nuts and studs.
Adjust the handbreak...

And hope I don't have to touch it until I get a new car
