Peugeot 106

Post by Gary406 »

well just bought my 1st car to sell on. been thinking of doing this for a while now but never did.

just bought a very nice and tidy 1998 peugeot 106 1.1 xn.
its only got 2 and a half months of MOT left on it but cant see it failing on much when next one is due.

underneith is nice and solid. engine is nice and tidy. no major oil leaks visable.

but it has got 100k on the clock. seen them on the net with this on , ive no idea about these cars and what sort of milage they can do.
it does sound sweet as a nut tho. no knocking whatso ever / no taps.

My 106 had 300000 miles when we got the new car. Yes, it was a diesel, but the car itself was still wonderful. Everything was original, never changed: gearbox, suspensions, engine, whatever. And it run wonderfully on veg oil (even a little fater than with diesel) doing up to 30km/l. Never opened the bonnet in the last 90000 miles, I swear.
A wonderful evil hatchback, keep it well and it will last forever.

As I do 15,000 miles/year commuting on my own, I've been seriuosly thinking about one of these myself. (I assume yours had a Bosch injection pump, Odin)?

Hope I don't get barred for this, but I kinda fancy the super-posh up-market Citreon, (cos it's got a temperature gauge)!

I honestly do not know, why are you asking? Get one. The only worrying thing on mine was that the ABS from the right wheel stopped working... bet we never fixed it
It wasmy mum's car so I didnt use it much. It was the car on which I learnt to drive (yes, I'm that young), so obviously I love it.

my mum had a wee 106 my dad and me bought it for her, it had a rotten wheelarch and my dad took a sthil saw to it and cut it out and cut the same part out of one at the scrapyard, a mechanic welded it in and sprayed it and it looked like new, no rust elsewhere.
The head gasket went but that was because the radiator got punctured and my mum ploughed on, no tempetaure gague, but even so she wouldnt have noticed. It also didnt start in the cold but that was fixed with some tuning of the fuel pump, the passenger door jammed but a bit of wd40 solved that. Other than that though all them problems were cheap to fix, it was so economical you had to pull in and drain the diesel, and it was comfortable.
after 2 years of driving we got £500 for it just what we paid.

yep i've subed sum cash out that so the pressure is on now to get it all ready and sold in 3-4 weeks

list of bits it needs -

2 wheel trims (or 4 if scrap yard wont sell me 2 or have 2 to match these) it has 2 original pug ones on i would like to keep them original.
a parcel shelf
just give the engine another good check over and there is a pipe that goes from the manifold cover to the air intake pipe just before air filter. this is slightly tore so gonna get that fixed.
dipstick doesnt seem to be the correct one

all in all those parts should cost no more than £20-£30

PS registered keeper accuired vehicle on the 03/07/2000  she owned it almost 11 years
to me that says its a good car or they wouldnt have kept it for so damn long

Paint has faded a bit. Maybe go over it with some T-Cut (or similar) to get the original paint colour shining through - a better shine on the paint will get more interest.

Incidentally, would 15" alloys from a 307 fit this car properly? I've still got the alloys from my old saloon and I need rid of 'em. If they're 15" tyres on the steel rims, then you could get them transferred over.

They'd only be 13" on there at the mo. At a guess, I'd say something like 165-185 width. 307 15" wheels should fit the 4 stud models, but unfortunately Gary's one only has 3 studs so it'd be a big no-no without major work.

Looks tidy enough, but if you're planning on doing this on a regular basis, either do it legit (trade insurance & registered as a trader with DVLA & taxman) or allow at least a couple of months between each car & spend a few quid with a (trustworthy) mechanic friend to give it a thorough check to make sure that nothing is going to go badly wrong within 3 months of selling it otherwise you'll be kissing goodbye to a lot more money than you lost on that laptop a few weeks ago. I did this a while ago, but thankfully I had a friend who was a legit car trader & most transactions were carried out through him so that if anything happened, we were both covered. Got to be honest though, apart from a couple of really good ones, I didn't make enough to be worth all the hassle of dealing with the public.
