New(er) motor!

Post by StevieboyTD »

Well after 20 months of cheap motoring it was only sensible to get rid of the most reliable car i've ever owned.

I've had a love for the simplicity of the old french diesels, easy to fix, cheap to run & solidly built.

So long old friend, you've served me well, a final wash before you go to your new owner ....

Off down to Penryn, where i picked up this beauty....

Nice upgrade huh? :D

Gone from a run of the mill 1.9td LX estate to a 2.1td Exec estate.

That last part is tricky. You can get a 2.1 exec, you can get a 2.1 estate, you can get a exec estate, but (until this car), i have never seen a 2.1 exec estate. And now it's mine. :D

I saw this car for sale in October for £1300 but is was in Hudersfield which was a bit out of my range. Then it showed up in Cornwall with a broken engine mount and snapped brake cable and a guy desparate to shift it to get another car as he was low on funds.

The day after we arrange things....

Bugger!

But it was just a higher power (Zeus, or possible Pan) helping me out. The rear windows are bonded in, meaning unless the car is in the breakers yard when you ring, they won't have a window for it as they don't bother cutting them out.

I drive to the breakers yard (Newton Abbott!) and find that the car with the window is a 2.1, a 2.1 with a blown head gasket so i'm welcome to strip the mount off the side of the block! It's fate, i was supposed to have this car!

Obviously the costs are important. How much did the change of car cost me?

£5

And that was the cost of the engine mount that had snapped on the 2.1 engine. Straight swap with the bloke.

I am an unbelievably happy bunny. Apart from the fact that i'm going in to get the carpel tunnel fixed in my left hand tomorrow and won't be able to drive the bugger for a while!

Nice one Steve!

Am I right in thinking the 2.1's already had a Bosch conversion? (My bro was looking at it ages ago if it is).....

The 2.1 came with a fly-by-wire Lucas Epic system as standard, but this car has had a Bosch conversion :D

That's what I meant - I seem to remember the tranquil rural location in the background of the pics you posted - must be the same car!

Total win on the new car - shame about the back window! Was it accidental or intended?

As for the 2.1TD Exec Estate - it would of been the most expensive new 406 out there, besides a coupe. I've seen one in Ebay - but they must be very rare!

Back window was a victim of half term i think, wife got home 10 minutes after me and the glass was still creaking from the break.

Bloody hell, just checked the MOT history online, in 2006 the car had 308k on the clock, now it shows 179k, think it's had a bit of a haircut!

And oddly i don't really care, still drove nicely.

Could this possibly get any better? The previous owner has just transferred £100 to me to cover the cost of the cam belt kit i was going to change :D

Nice to know goodwill is still around.

The clocking was done before he bought it though, before the owner before him bought it actually if my info is right.

He'd already offered to swap the cars back but i turned him down as i'm still happy with this one.

edit, and it's more like 230,000 miles off ;)

Does it not bother you that you don't know the exact amount of miles the cars done?

Not that bothered really, the interior is clean, the exterior is fairly clean (needs a few bits sorting but nothing major) and the engine runs nicely.

Looks nice anyway :)
Whats the power like compared to the 1.9?
I assume it was like my stage 1 tune?

Tempted to drop a 2.1 into a 306, but my Dad said I'm not allowed unless I rent a garage
