My mother in-law just rang me at work as she had a guy claiming to be from Microsoft on the landline and wanted to check with me if it was genuine. She'd already allowed him access to her laptop so I told her to unplug the PC from the web and tell the bloke to piss off.
A quick Google confirmed my suspicions - basically if anyone rings you claiming to be from Microsoft or another such compnay tell them (in the nicest possible terms) to go f*ck themselves!!!!
They sound very plausible when they know all your contact details so don't be sucked in.

id be suprised if microsoft caled me to fix something, if anyone was going to call it would be the pc maker ie dell, hp, toshiba etc and thats very unlikeley.
if they ring just say you have a mac, or linux, thier scam is then ruined.

My parents got a call from a bunch like this. The Indian bloke on the phone was quite pushy, and my Dad kept asking him (politely) what it was he was calling about. Eventually, the bloke told my Dad to "Go to hell" and hung up on him
