Clio and 306

Post by FarmerPug »

im thinking about buying a 306 again, this time its one a far out relative whos selling one a 1998 5 door turbo diesel (not many 5 doors with a turbo) 150k miles on the clock at £700, they have had it from new.
But id buy it to replace my mums clio, but i need to know what its worth a 2002 1.2 16v with 50k and a big scratch up the side wing, mirror and rear wheel arch, and a cigarette hole on the front passenger seat. But its just got 12 months mot. Since the clio seem to be held together as well as the supliments inside a newspaper i dont think changing a wing, or a mirror, even the interior would be a big job (the back bench seat just lifts out for example)
heres the clio, before my mum added the scrape (caused by reversing out of the garage):

would the clio be worth enough to get the 306, and would a 306 be a better car, the clios problem is the poor fuel economy.

If you trust the relative, and they have looked after it, the 306 could be a good buy.
I did the same with a ZX diesel, from a relative and it was in the extended family from new, well maintained, and it was one of the best cars I've owned.
Only thing is, I've heard of 306s with dodgy earth electrics that discharge the battery overnight.

Can you patch up the scratch with some red polish or a touchup paint pen? Would make selling easier. I doubt many people would car about the cigarette hole.

the front wing is really badly scratched id just replace it and the mirror, the rear arch a bit of gumtree would work on it :cheesy:
the seat i notice it a lot because i had the car a week and i did look after it when i was driving it but my aunt dropped an ash getting in and burnt the seat, it really bugged me at the time if i could id just change over the seat for one out of the scrapyard, id probably cry if it happened on the leather in the peugeot though

I can't view the pics at work but the clio should easily cover the cost of the pug, put some time and elbow grease into the paintwork and possibly a replacement seat from the breakers (I paid £25 for a drivers seat for a Brava a few months back) and you will move the clio easily to a young driver looking for cheap insurance.

My only concern is selling it for a more economical ride, if the 306 is a non HDI you may not see a massive gain in MPG's. I know the 306 is much smaller but my 1.9td gives me 33/34 MPG if I'm gentle on the throttle around town, MUCH LESS if I boot it.

personally if i knew the pug had been looked after I'd buy it but not on the grounds of better fuel economy, just cos I'd rather drive it than the clio

i know a 306 is better to drive than a clio, old pugs just are good to drive, the clio is a good handling car but driving a clio is a bit isolated from whats actually happening. Although thats not what my mum wants in a car, just better seats, more comfort and something more economical. The 306 i see the specs doesnt match the economy of the clio, but the clio is not even close to what it should do, i think its about 25mpg at the moment

There is LOADS of 5 door 1.9TD 306's.
You can pick up a decent HDi for £500.
The 306 is wayy overpriced in my opinion, would pay no more than £500 for it :)

nice little clio that frank,

306s are an awesome little car id love another one,

id say the clio is worth about £850 if its got a poor interior,
few scrapes on clios dont put buyers off if its priced fairly

your right about the 306s i can pick up a hi spec hdi for the same money which would bring down the age of the car more, my mum is put off the idea of a 1998.

here is the clio right now:

(mirror might do with a sanding down and respray as opposed to having to change it)

there is that, and then my mum also drove into an X5's towbar:

(note the presence of parking sensors put there to avoid something like that happening)

the interior of the car is actually in a good state, just the hole on the seat:

id spend a bit of time with t cut and polish and most of that damage will be reduced.if you cant find a seat then what about a set of seat covers? or you could get it mended for about 25 pounds but most people wont care.

dont bother with seat covers frank.
get some Stardrops mix it up so its a foam soloution and clean the seats.
Fag burn -get some cotton the same colour and one of them hook shape needles and pull in the hole with the cotton,
itl hide the fag burn, ive done loads that way its not 100% brilliant but it makes the seat look better,

Bumper couid be pushed out if you took it off and warmed it with a heat gun (from the inside) alittle and pushed it out you will just end up with a graze mark on the grey plastic,

sound like a plan thanks lozz, a bit of heat would push it out rightly.

it normaly does ,

just keep the heat at a fair distance, and get something like a lump of wood, end of a hammer or something and just push (not hammer  ) the dent outwards whilst your applying heat,

quicker way is just drill a small hole in the bumper and get something with a hook and pull it out,
but that leaves you with the messing with plastic filler afterwards,

Nowt wrong with that Clio. Bit of red colour magic and it'll sell.

I've bought worse that I thought was good condition!
